Starbucks Employee Should be Disciplined or Terminated

Posted Sat August 16, 2008 12:00 pm, by Suzette J. written to Starbucks

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I visited the drive-thru @Center & Mullen 8/15/08 6:42am. When I got to the window, I handed the girl my debit card and driver's license. She dropped the license, it went under my car. She said "oops". She said I could pull forward and get it. I told her I'm recovering from a back injury and cannot bend down that far to the ground to pick up things, if I pull forward could an employee please pick up my license for me? She said "no, they're too busy, maybe one of the people behind you can do it" I said "you mean the customers in their cars behind me?" , she said "yeah". At this point I was ready to fume.

I pulled forward, got out of my car, had to bend my best, looking like an idiot almost lying on the ground to pick up the damn license while the twit employee thought it was funny, get back in my car, drove backwards to the window, she hand me my drink & yogurt says " have a really nice day", I said "where's my donut?", "you didn't order a donut", showed her my receipt, "oops" she gave it to me and I left never planning to return to a Starbucks as long as I live. I started going back to Starbucks after they "retrained" employees and was happy for the most part. I go their almost everyday, and sometimes 2 times daily.

Besides the obvious of employee discipline or termination, nothing is acceptable to me except one year of free drinks. If not, I will never step into a Starbucks again. Thank you.

Some of you people are missing the entire point. There was no reason
the employee should have acted this with way. It should have been
handled in a more appropriate way. She or another employee should have
made an effort to get it, regardless if it was a accident or the
customer had an attitude before or after this incident happened. Also,
forget about getting one year's worth of free drinks, because this
will not happen. Your best opinion would be to talk to the manager of
the store, explain your situation and see what he/she has to say. For
all you know the manager might not even care or maybe they will. If
they do and this employee has had a complaint before, you might be in
luck. My suggestion is to get over it or do something about it. Again,
sorry to hear about this and I hope you are okay.

I felt for your cause until the end of your letter. Termination? No.
Discipline - yes. A YEAR of free drinks....now, you're pushing it -
way. too. far.

Maybe a $10 gift card or something. That I can see...but a year?
Sorry.

Such rudeness. I'm sorry you had to get out of your car and she
dropped your license. Sounds like she's a teenager who doesn't care
about her customers. Geez! If a customer needs help, they should help
you.

I had an experience with a StarBucks where I waited 15 minutes before
we were served with our drinks. We had an appointment and I've
realized never go to Star Bucks if you're on the way to an
appointment.

Oh, Suzette... I was (mostly) with you until the end of your letter. I
didn't agree that the employee should be terminated, but I was nodding
my head thinking "wow, that employee was rude - they really should
speak to her about it." Then you demanded a year of free drinks and
you lost my respect. I'm rolling my eyes at you now, not her.

I hate to be mean but as usually we see the "demands" because of the
issue. You are able to drive but not bend down? I had back surgery and
started an exercise probram 4 days out, yet was not allowed to drive
for 2 weeks. While the employee was wrong I think we didn't get the
whole story.

Good complaint, hate the demand at the end.

What I would like to know is why did you hand over your license too?
Was it requested? You don't state that. If someone wants to see my ID
they ask for it after I present my debit card for payment, not
before.

While I do think that the employee could have spared a moment to help
you, you're making it lot less credible by calling her names.

Next time, pay cash.

An otherwise decent letter spoiled by completely unreasonable demands
at the end.

Termination? Free drinks for a year (you can't be serious)?

The employee should have acted better. But, this was an accident. I
can see maybe giving you one (1) free drink for this lapse of
judgement on the part of the employee.

Accidents happen. I know that if *I* were in this situation, I would
have helped my guest, but I don't see how she is responsible for you
dropping it, although her response could have been more polite,
however I wonder if you were a perfect angel yourself... A polite
request most likely get a good response, if you called her a twit or
worse in person, then she will feel no desire to help you.

Free drinks for a year?!?!? I literally laughed out loud when I read
this. Free drinks for a year because you had to bend over and pick
something up?

A reasonable request to Starbucks would have been to ask what they
could do in cases such as this where the card/license/money happens to
fall between the window and vehicle.

I have done this before with change dropping down between the window
and my car and I pulled to the side and an employee stopped the
vehicles from pulling up so he could get my change.
He said they do this all the time...but of course this was at Wendy's
and not Starbucks.

I doubt you will get a years supply of free coffee...so I think its
time to seek out another place to drive up to get your morning java.

The other commenters nailed it - you have a valid complaint. Then you
had to ruin it by asking Starbucks for the equivilant of a blank
check.

As such a seemingly loyal customer, I would think that you could be
forgiving of a single employee's error in judgement.

I confused as to why you didn't ask her to get someone else, perhaps
the manager to help you. She may have been a rude employee and maybe
not a good problem solver, so she may have needed a little help at
finding a solution that would not involve her leaving her station and
getting in trouble.

Swearing off going to Starbucks and then saying that you aren't going
to swear it off if they give you something at the end is really silly
to me.

Here is another valid complaint ruined by excessive demands, terminate
the employee and free drinks for a year or I'll never go back to any
Starbucks.

Why are you punishing all employees of all Starbucks for the actions
of one employee? Why not ask for a manager on the spot and tell
him/her what happened? I don't think she dropped your license on
purpose but her actions after she dropped it were inappropiate.
