"Cool" Hot Chocolate

Posted Mon March 5, 2007 10:35 am, by Andrea R. written to Starbucks

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to Starbucks for having "Kid drinks."

A couple of weeks ago we were out sledding and decided to grab some coffee and hot chocolate after. We ended up at Starbucks, and I ordered a small hot chocolate for my 4 year old. The employee told me that they had Hot Chocolate for kids - smaller and served at a temperature cooler than normal.

When we got the hot chocolate, I tested it to make sure it wasn't too hot. It was PERFECT. My son could drink it immediately without me having to blow on it for an hour or dilute it with a cup of milk.

This seems like such a small thing, but it's extremely helpful to parents who would like to enjoy things together with their kids.

If only restaurants would start learning not to serve kids' meals flaming hot!!

Thank you Starbucks! We'll be stopping by more often because of this.

How cool! I didn't know this and my kids would love that for a treat
one of these cold days!

I agree!! My daughter loves their hot chocolate and it's so nice not
to here "It's still too hot" all the way home.

Excellent letter Andrea! Personally, I hate Starbucks for 2 reasons:
Overpriced and too strong! But that's just my opinion. I would much
prefer Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

However, a kids' hot chocolate is a great idea, and kudos to Starbucks
for coming up with that idea! Actually, it even appeals to me as
well, since every time I get a hot chocolate, I seem to be in too much
of a hurry to drink it, and end up burning my tongue in the process!

Ok, now I'm starting to get the urge for a hot chocolate!! Thanks a
lot, Andrea... :P

LOL!

I wish Starbuck's would mention this on the menu. My son likes their
chai and we found out, like you did, that they offer a "kid's"
version.

But I think it would be great if they had it on the menu so that
parents know it's available in case the barrista neglects to mention
it or doesn't know it's for a child.

It's great that they do this though.

This is great! When we make hot chocolate at home, I add a scoop of
ice cream to cool it down for the kids. Unfortunately, since you can't
do that at a coffee shop, my kids never get hot chocolate on the road.
It's great to know I can stop into Starbucks on a cold day and my kids
can enjoy a warm treat while I drink my latte!

What a great concept! My 12 year old son too loves hot chocolate but
then has to add milk to cool it off. I will have try this. Thanks
for letting us know.

What a great letter! And a wonderful idea for Starbucks. The drink is
undilluted, It's appealing to everyone because the kids and adults can
enjoy quality time warming up before going back out. I'll have to
check their menu.. is it something on the menu or do you have to ask
for them specifically (just wondering). Would make a neat
commercial... Norman Rockwell scene with a family at Starbucks...
anyway I like to see letters like this. I hope they respond and let
this particular store know it's attention to detail is appreciated!!

I'll bet that idea was thought up by an employee with kids!... hahaha.
It really is a good idea because that way no one has to worry about
the kids burning their mouths, including Starbucks!

What a great letter! And what a great thing for Starbucks to do! I
wonder whether Caribou Coffee (Minnesota's answer to Starbucks) does
the same thing. Even as an adult, I find hot chocolate to be served
way too hot. I'm not a coffee drinker, so my tongue hasn't been
scalded into submission yet.

Excellent job.

It's only natural that Starbucks start making drinks for kids. After
all, soccer moms must, by title, have children, and no one wants to
give their kid a caffine-infussed latte at six years old.

I think it's a wonderful idea to have the drinks served at a lower
temperature for children. I remember quite clearly burning my tongue
off every time I got a hot chocolate from Tim Horton's.

For another "hot" chocolate drink for kids, try throwing a few ice
cups, some milk, and a couple tablespoons of hot chocolate mix into a
blender and letting it run enough to crush the ice and mix all the
power and milk together. Pure heaven. And it was on Oprah, so you know
it's good.

What a great idea! It does seem small, but often the small things
make all the difference between a happy repeat customer and, well, not
a happy repeat customer. I'm so glad you took the time to let them
know you are in the former category! :)

That is a really great idea to have cooler items for children. I
always see parents blowing on food for their children and this way
they don't have to wait and risk their food getting cold!

Great letter! And I'm very disappointed that comments are being
pulled. This is a noble cause that is being ruined by administration.
