I once had a bad customer experience with subway, due to rude workers I did,t say anything at the subway but did send a complaint notice of how I was treated and within a week corporate office was calling me and informing me that they had called the subway I visited to correct the situation and then proceeded to send me a free subway coupon.

you people put too much stock these employees
theoretically yes the customer should be the number 1 priority. if you were a sandwich maker would you honestly put the customer before an important phone call. those jobs are a dime a dozen and i am sure getting paid minimum wage isnt much of an incentive to ignore the phone call

You should give the employee the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she really needed to make an important call. You said she used the company phone and not a cell phone. When we are at work and need to make an important call we make it. People need to be a little more understanding.

Why didn't you just say "enjoy my lunch and walk out?" That would have gotten your point acros and you could have gotten lunch elsewhere and been happy, and you would have won both ways.

This sort of behavior will continue until a majority of people are willing to speak up and call someone out on this. Some people honestly were never taught any common courtesy!

I hate it when the store clerks are talking or texting when they're supposed to be waiting on me!
Seems to me it was a personal call. Most business phones are right at the register for all of the customers to hear the conversation. If it was a business call, I would hope that a letter wouldn't be written.

While I wouldn't go through with it, I'd be VERY TEMPTED to just grab my sandwich and head out. If she doesn't want to take my money, I'll just get my food and go.

No personal calls should be made at the work station. Received or made. If you work with the public then they are your top priority. If you have an emergency than another associate or the manager will take over. From What the OP was posting I doubt it was an emergency.

How did you know if the personal phone call was not an urgent issue? If it was an emergency, I'll be darned if any strange person at my job place comes BEFORE my loved ones!

back when i was at little creek.... at the base subway, if your order was for more than x amount of sandwiches (maybe 3 or 5 i don't remember) you had to call or fax it in ahead of time
i sure hope people don't expect employees to go on break to answer that kind of phone call...

I completely agree.
A few people mentioned this might have been an emergency. Fine. Then the proper thing to do is make sure another employee is able to handle the next customer while going into the back to make the call.

Normally I would frown upon an employee using the phone for a personal call while working, but if I heard the conversation and it was something that really couldn't wait or an emergency, and it didn't take too long, I would be willing to overlook it. Maybe the employee couldn't leave the register to make the call away from the customers.
Did you hear the conversation?

and were they calling out or calling in?
what did they say?
i ask because ... personally i can tolerate some forms of personal calls. sure i want my food, but if i have to wait 120 seconds for the retail person to call home to say "hey remember to pick up whatever kid from daycare"... it won't ruin my day or my sandwich.

ask for customers to refrain from cell-phone use while placing orders!
