Norton Internet Security is No Longer Reliable

A few months ago, my Norton Security 2007 said it expired - I purchased a new CD, and as it turned out, it hadn't expired - there was a glitch in your system. I spoke to a technician and after many hours (because your fix didn't work) he got me up and running and made me whole by crediting me with the days I had left on my old CD.
Last week, we began having problems on our PC - porno ads turning up on legitimate websites, weird websites popping up. I notice that Norton Security was not active - when I tried to launch it, I got a message that it was unable to launch.
We called a technician in - we had over 150 intrusions and spyware. He advised us to remove Norton because he finds it unstable and unreliable (and slows down PCs), and he installed a free version of AVG and SpyBot.
I thought my computer was relatively safe since I paid for a subscription to Norton Anti Virus, but twice this year it failed me. Luckily, this only cost me $112 for the technician plus the cost of a year's subscription to Norton Anti-Virus.
All I want you to do is to make sure your product works and is reliable before you sell it. All the IT people I know have been telling me that Norton, while once the best user-friendly program there was, has become unreliable. I should have heeded their advice.

Sorry to hear about that, but I agree Norton has turned to junk. The best antivirus/security suite you can buy is Kaspersky!!!! I've had them for years now and am very happy with their product, check them out!

I agree with what everyone's been saying; I had Norton for a while, but it was basically a huge expensive white elephant. Switched to McAfee, but stopped bothering with it after it failed to spot a huge threat which floored my computer. -.- Now, I'm using AVG along with Ad-Aware; both are free programmes, but are miles better than both Norton and McAfee put together.

I'm with you on this one. I stopped using Norton a few years back and don't regret it at all.

I once did this to myself. It was the worst ting I had ever done. My computer slowed to a crawl. I couldn't do anything without a Norton pop up. It was awful. Even when I uninstalled it still didn't help my computer. I had to get some software called "Norton Killer"

Thanks to all of you for your comments - you always wonder if the free anti-viruses are worth it...and from your comments, I know I did the right thing. It's a shame that there are so many folks like me that are paying for what I think has become a pretty unreliable program.

Once upon a time, I used to rely on Norton but not anymore. My father recently found a virus on one of his older computer that actually hides in Norton. It's sad that Norton just isn't what it used to be.

My husband is a computer guru, and he'll also tell you not to use Norton or McAfee. He calls them "Viruses that call themselves anti-viruses". He'll also recommend SpyBot and routine housecleaning on it.

I just uninstalled my copy of Norton last night and installed Avast. I've used it before, but I had Norton on my computer because it came free with the purchase. I was reminded of how much of a resource hog and memory hog it is.
I can now start up my computer without waiting 5-10 minutes for Norton to do its job. Avast does as good a job as Norton, at no cost. Just because it's freeware does not mean it doesn't work just as good.

You're completely right, Norton has really gone downhill since it first came out.

This is the Freeware thread at bleepingcomputer, If you take the time to read the board, you will notice that most of the IT folks that frequent this board have a low opinion of McAfee and Norton.
I am presently using the paid version of BitDefender. I paid 40 dollars for two computers for two years.

Norton used to be a good program. It is not any more.
Those free programs he installed will give you less headaches in the long term. There are more free ones out there that do not bog down your system or even allow virii or spyware to get through.
Did I mention there are better programs out there for free?
