Return Policy

Out of some 50 items included on a gift registry at Target, 3 items needed to be returned. One, Kitchen Aid accessory rack, was uneventful because we had the gift receipt. The next item was a 2-3 man tent which my sister had purchased for us. We took it camping and discovered it was obviously used (there was dirt throughout and an old makeup brush) and one of the tent frame posts was missing. I hate to return things and would've probably kept the tent if it hadn't been missing an important part. At one Target, without a gift receipt, though the item was on our registry, we couldn't return the tent. A manager did finally offer to replace the tent with one from their shelves (thanks Jeff @ Lakeland South Store) but he was unable to help us with the last item. We had received a duplicate Salad Spinner, a really cool salad rinsing/mixing tool. We had no use for two but didn't have a gift receipt with this one to return. The item is about $32 and so exceeds the $20 limit we were informed prevents them from issuing even a store credit (that's all we were asking for). The manager at least appeared to try and help us but in the end appeared powerless to resolve the issue and could only give us a number to call for possibly some sort of override from corporate or something. I spent some time on the phone and explained the situation but was only given the same response: you need a receipt of some sort or the purchasing info. This is from a wedding gift registry! I can re-gift this to someone else or return it to a store with a more reasonable policy but why do I feel as if I've done something wrong? The only thing I can determine that I did wrong was to create a registry with Target - I personally will never make this mistake again... nor will I buy merchandise for myself or others through this establishment. I know business and if I may quote Albert Schindler who wrote 5 Secrets of Good Customer Service: "Remember, no amount of advertising can repair the damage done by failing to properly address a customer's concern. Even more damaging to a small business is the "silent complainer." That's the customer who simply walks out of your shop without saying a word, and you never see him again. These silent complainers have friends. And their friends have friends." - Correct you are Mr. Schindler. I refer friends and I warn friends. So for those of you putting together gift registries (Baby shower, wedding, etc), I recommend avoiding headaches and avoiding the "convenience" of Target.

Accept merchandise for store credit and correct policy (accept returns based on gift registry) that places newlyweds (wedding gift registry creators) in an awkward and unacceptable position.

how fortunate you are to have all your friends be able to locate your
greedy little wish list all in one place.

if you want to buy in to the greed machine of telling people what to
buy you, then don't get all upset when the greed machine turns on
you.

i mean, returning a GIFT, that is lower than telling people what to
buy you.

You are not the first and will not be the last to not being able to
return items on your gift registry especially without the gift
reciept.

I am not being sarcastic, but there are so many people who have been
having this problem of late because they are either past the time that
the reciept is good or the gift registry has expired.
Would it be so terrible to give the salad spinner as a gift to someone
at work, a relative or a friend and then buy yourself something you
really want for the same price?
I would rather see it put to good use than to just not be able to do
anything with it...and if you wanted to tell the person who gave you
the gift and feel they would not be offended then do so. Who knows,
they may even want it for themself or to give to someone else as a
gift. Then they can purchase something you have no duplicates of for
the same price, or give you a gift card.

I understand some people may feel a bit queasy about doing this but to
me its a simple solution to an ever increasing issue lately.

I happen to REALLY love Target. Get get stuff there all the time.
That being said, I LIKE their Return Policy. It keeps MY costs down
because they don't have to jack up their prices because of people
ripping them off. I do have one question though: Where does it say
"Returns accepted if it is something off a Registry. Even if
there is NO receipt and NO proof it came from Target"? People
seem to think that if you have a registry that says its OK to not
follow the rules. I don't get it.

Registry DOES NOT equal Receipt!

Yet another letter about Target's return policy, and of curse the
usual and obligatory responses blaming the OP.

Does anyone get yet, that it really doesn't matter what anyone here
thinks of the OP? The reality is that, if these letters are any
indication, Target is taking a huge PR hit. I'm sure they're only an
infinitesimal sampling of those who are affected and put off by the
policy. So while you may (ahem) "educate" a few here, a much
bigger problem remains--and it's one Target needs to address already.

If I were Target, I'd be especially concerned when these complaints
involve the lucrative gift registry services.

You know the policy, but you don't want to follow it. There isn't
anything else to say, other that it was nice (ie not required) of them
to exchange the faulty tent.

Sell the spinner on ebay.

Target's return policy is well advertised, and becoming more widely
known by people who haven't taken the time to read the receipts they
are given (which should have been handed to you).

Target prints a gift receipt with every purchase and their return
policy is printed on every receipt. It clearly states that a receipt
is required for all returns. I don't, for the life of me, understand
why people don't include the gift receipt. I tape it to the card.

Gift Receipts make excellent gift tags! I wish Target printed their
return policy somewhere on the registry or on their reciepts, it would
make some people's lives much easier.

"We had received a duplicate Salad Spinner, a really cool salad
rinsing/mixing tool. We had no use for two but didn't have a gift
receipt with this one to return."

So... did you have a receipt for the other one?

The thing is, it may be the same make and model as the one Target
sells, but your gift giver could have gotten it somewhere else, or you
could be the recipient of a regift yourself. My cousin and his bride
registered for a nice cappuccino machine, but I got it at COST because
I have a friend who works for the manufacturer. If they wanted to
return it through their registry, they'd be out of luck. It was a
risk I was willing to take to save a ton of money but still give an
awesome gift.

It just comes down to this: Without a receipt, you DO NOT KNOW WHERE
IT WAS BOUGHT. Plain and simple.

And once again, let this be a lesson to people: if you are going to
give a gift, please, in the name of all that is holy, include the gift
receipt with the gift. If the gift givers in this case had done that,
there would be no need for this letter.
