Incomplete Return was Your Cashier's Fault, Target

Tonight I went to my local Target, intending on returning some unneeded items. In the past two weeks, I have spent around $600 at this and one other Target. The amount of the total return was $130. It included several different items such as some Tag reading books and extra cleaning items. Now, I shop regularly at Target.
I am aware that the back of the receipt states it is needed for a return. I also know that a sign posted at every customer service counter at every Target states they can use your credit card to look up any item you purchase. I have made returns before using my credit card. On this particular night, however, that policy was not true. The cashier at the counter ran my card through the machine, scanned most of the items, and told me they had been found on the card. She then stupidly hit the restart button on the computer. This crashed the computer, and lost the return I had attempted to do. She then proceeded to another computer. When she ran my card through again, and scanned some of the items, she said they were not found on the card. She had just found them on the other computer! She then called her manager, who told her to call "refund authorization." I stood there for 35 minutes while she spoke with someone at the authorization center. She was told they could not help her. I then asked to speak to the store manager. He came over, and spoke with me for ten minutes, and gave me the runaround. Basically, they couldn't help me. I could try coming back tomorrow (according to the store manager)to try to return those items again. Why would I want to drive back to a store that couldn't help me the first time? Why would I spend more money on gas, when I was trying to get my money back? Now, the part that bothers me about the situation is 1) the cashier found the items on the card the first time, and 2) the whole situation was her fault.
I would like a full refund-no store credit. I want it back the way I paid. $100 cash, and the remaining $35-$40 on my credit card.

I've noticed lately when I use my credit card for receipt look-up at Target, if it is the same day or if it is the Target card, they can't look it up. Could that be the case for some of your items? Also, if you used cash for some of the items, then you cannot use receipt look-up for them. I once wanted to get a refund on my card, but since I paid cash and used a card, the computer decided I should get a cash refund. I don't think the cashier has any control over that.

Check with your credit card company to see if these items have been removed before you go back there. If she cannot see them listed then it may be that they were already removed. Maybe when the system shut down the procedure was completed.
And please don't call people stupid...everyone makes a mistake.
However even if the manager was apologetic he/she could have said that they would personally handle this issue if you could come back the next day. I would have felt a little better knowing someone was personally concerned about this incident and did not take it lightly.

I for one am on your side in this. If she hadn't been able to find it, you wouldn't have a leg to stand on, I think. But the fact that she found it and then suddenly screwed you out of $140 because she accidentally hit a button would get on my nerves as well. I can't imagine how frustrating that is.
That said, I hope you find your receipt. It's probably the only way you'll be able to do the return now.

would you spend that kind of money (esp such a large portion of it in CASH) and not keep track of your receipt? I hate to say that 95% of the problem would have been avoided had you just held onto that!
While it is unfortunate that the situation happened the way it did, I think you have a lot of nerve making the "stupidly" comment. (Esp since you lost your receipt in much the same manner!)
They have no way of proving HOW you paid for this transaction other than your word at this point, and after you insulted the cashier, I can imagine they wouldn't be very eager to help you out. You better take what you can get instead of making a bunch of demands or just let it go.

"She then stupidly hit the restart button on the computer."
And how would you describe your losing the receipt?

Why is it the cashier's fault for hitting the restart button on the computer. Isn't your fault for not bringing in your receipt? If you would have had the receipt, you could have completed the return after register incident.

What the heck was she thinking when she accidently hit that button? Fire her for being so stupid!
If items were purchased using cash, the only way you will get a refund is to present the receipt. But you know that. And the only reason you were at the mercy of the STUPID cashier is that you forgot or misplaced your receipt. Was the stupid cashier responsible for that?
I hope there isn't a STUPID cashier there when you drive back to return the 20%+ items you bought without realizing you didn't need them.
Stupid cashier. Customers are so much smarter.

The cashier did not do this on purpose. Why is it so hard for people to accept that people make mistakes? To say that she stupidly did this was just wrong.
You know you need a receipt but showed up without one but this is all her fault? Where is your responsibility in this matter? Had you had your receipt, this would not have happened.

I was following this letter until I read the last paragraph. You were never going to get back $100 in cash without a receipt, so why do you expect it now?
It sounds like the cashier made a mistake, but that doesn't make her stupid. You should have been grateful she was willing to look up your items because you failed to present a receipt. The most you'll get back is the amount on your card if those items show up again when you go back. If you don't think it's worth returning to the store, then just chalk this up to experience. Next time, bring your receipt.

I'm confused - - first you state that you paid with a credit card and then in your last paragraph you state that you paid $100 cash and $35-$40 on your credit card.
OK - - so the cashier made a mistake when she hit the wrong button on the computer. But you made a mistake when you didn't keep your receipts so I fail to see how the whole situation was her fault.
