Trying to Pay an Old Collection and Have it Removed From My Credit Reports

In late January '09 I wrote to a VP in Public Affairs at Time Warner in Milwaukee, WI regarding the problem I am having in trying to resolve an unpaid bill that went to collections in late 2006. It has been listed on my credit reports since then, and in doing credit repair and rebuilding my credit I'm hoping to take care of all of my past delinquent accounts, most of which I have. I was hoping to pay in full this account directly to TW, as the collection agency refuses to take a payment or even validate that the debt is mine.
Time Warner was gracious enough to respond to my letter as one of their Public Affairs reps sent me a letter in late February, and we spoke in mid-March by phone, but she could not understand what my objective was ... that being I would pay the ENTIRE amount I owe to Time Warner ($176) and that they would in turn take the account out of collections and have it removed from my credit reports. This practice has been done before, and although it's not common, it can be done.
After the PA rep and I spoke on the phone, and she told me that all she could do was take my payment and send it to the collection agency, who would in turn mark the account as a paid collection (putting a further black mark on my reports), I asked if she could have a supervisor call me back. I have not heard anything since then (mid-March).
She did mention she would follow-up with her supervisor, but I have not received a phone call or a letter since that time.
I'm just hoping that someone at Time Warner can help me out here and make this right, both for me (as the consumer who would like to use their services again in the future), and for them (who I'm sure in this economy would like to see this bill paid as well).
Thanks for any assistance I may receive as a result of this correspondence.
