Flight Delays and Rescheduling Issues

On August 25th, my husband, 1 yr old daughter, and I were travelling home to Indiana from the Big Island of Hawaii. Our flight was delayed 4 hours due to insufficient rest time by the crew. As a result, we had to wait from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. at the outdoor airport which had insufficient seating for the number of people. As a result of our flight being delayed by 4 hours, we missed our connecting flight and had to therefore make 2 more connections before arriving in Indianapolis 8 hours after we were originally supposed to. I am upset about the situation, and can't believe we had to go through this with a 1 yr old. We paid extra money early on to book the shorter flight, and then got shafted because there was not enough crew to handle the situation. In addition to this delay, some of the flight attendants had the nerve to inform me that my daughter woke everyone up in the front of the plane. Unfortunately, a 1 yr old without sleep and meals is not really easy to deal with.

I would like reimbursement for our tickets. My husband had to work the next day, and as I mentioned, we paid extra money to get home at 3:30 p.m. Instead we arrived home at midnight. I am very disappointed with the way US Airways handled this delay. Especially for people travelling with small children.

I don't think Tracie is asking for extra special treatment from the
airline because she has a child. I think she is just saying the icing
to the cake of all of this is that they had to deal with it with a 1
year old in tow - and then the obviously incompetent flight attendant
somehow wanted to place the blame of people being awake on her baby
instead of taking responsibility for it herself as an employee of an
airline that is understaffed!

That being said - I don't think it is too much for a customer to ask
to get what they paid for. If there was a legitimate, UNCONTROLLABLE
delay (such as inclement weather or mechanical issues) I would say
that the airline is not at fault. However, outside of these
uncontrollable circumstances, the airline should provide the service
that people pay for - and part of what IS controllable is having
plenty of flight crew available that is rested as the FAA mandates.
When purchasing a ticket the customer and the company agree upon a
said price - the customer agrees to pay X price for the service, and
the company agrees to provide the service at X price. The customer
should not get shafted simply because they paid a lesser price. The
company AGREED to provide the service at this price! No one forces the
company to provide the service at the price they offer it at. Most of
the time I am on the side of the airline when it comes to people
complaining because of delay since usually it is due to some
uncontrollable circumstance. But in this instance it was the airline's
fault. Unfortunately, these days you are at the mercy of the airlines
when you purchase a ticket. This is why I simply don't fly anymore. I
drive, take a train, or take a ship - or simply don't go at all! Let
me tell you, the service you recieve on Amtrak is stellar compared to
the airlines! And it's much more comfortable and reliable travel as
well - albeit much slower! But in my opinion the world was a much
better place when it was slower anyway...

you need to understand how airlines operate by Jason F. Mon October 26, 2009 @ 1:10 AM

Most airlines do not offer complete reimbursement for delayed flights.
At most, you get some sort of voucher for a future flight.

I have to ask you, would you want to put your safety in the hands of
an overtired flight crew? I wouldn't.

I don't think flying with a child adds any weight to her complaint, but by Venice Sat August 29, 2009 @ 4:42 PM
