Inaccurate Credit Reporting!

I had a Verizon phone account and at some point in 2007 I had an $800 in long distance charges on my phone, do even know how that happened and I continued to have Verizon phone service but they wrote off that balance and reported on my credit. I continued to have Verizon phone service and a few months ago changed to another carrier and Verizon then added that balance, $200.00 on my credit report. It is the same account but showing on my credit report as two! It is like having one credit card showing up twice with two different balances! I never opened two accounts with Verizon! I have explained this and called customer service multiple times and no one will do anything. Secondly I offered to pay even though I dispute the $800.00 charges and asked if they would delete upon payment and called multiple times for a return phone call from a manager or supervisor and NOTHING! This inaccurate reporting is keeping me from being approved to buy a house that I have come up for in an affordable housing lottery here in MA and mortgage broker advised unless I get it cleared up, I can not get the house, just because of this Verizon issue on my credit report which is the only negative thing I have on there. I am still a customer with high speed internet and was planning to get FIOS when it comes to my area. I am a low income single parent and this is my only chance to get a house!
I would like Verizon to treat me like a valued customer (which I am). After disconnecting my phone service I received a sales letter from Verizon asking what can they do to get me to come back? Well, I would like the accounts reporting on my credit report to report accurately as the ONE account that I opened! I would also like Verizon to since I am still a customer, make a good will gesture and delete these accounts off of my credit report after I make payment. I have not made payment yet as my mortgage broker indicates that the account being paid will make no difference on my credit if it is still there after it is paid. But would pay immediately if this could get sorted out.

1. I did dispute the $800.00, they immediately wrote it off and put it on my credit. And regardless of the dispute, I still offered to pay to clear it up.
2. If the issue was as simple as simply paying the bill, I would not be on here.
I did not open two accounts with Verizon, I opened one and I continue to have that account open as I have DSL with the same account number. So how can an open active account be charged off? This is not new, this has been an ongoing dispute.

So you just decided not to pay or dispute the $800? If so, that is not Verizon's fault, it's yours.

as to why it is a great idea to keep your credit clean. If a disagreement with a company arises, it is wise to get it straightened out and not hope it goes away.
There have been many complaint letters here, with a similar theme. Some item from the past is sitting on the credit report. Then the holder wants to buy a house or car, and can't.
I feel bad for the OP, but it highlights the need to keep your credit in good shape. You never know when you will need it.
