Is Verizon FIOS for Men Only?

Posted Thu May 21, 2009 6:19 am, by Venice G. written to Verizon Local Telephone (and FIOS)

After seeing many versions of your commercial with the FIOS technician and the cable guy, I realized that the customer is always a man. I'm wondering if this is a true representation of your clientele, or if it's what you believe will attract new customers.

I'm just curious why you have excluded women from these commercials and would like to know if you are planning to use a woman in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Here in Minnesota, there are public awareness campaigns on television
regarding drunk drivers and people who drive without seatbelts, and
every single person is a man. It's like they don't think women drive
drunk or without seatbelts. Strange.

However going off that logic by Nate! Tue May 26, 2009 @ 8:34 AM

It's a matter of market segmentation. They are segmenting the target
market by gender, which is demographics. The service is likely to
appeal to men, or they are looking to get men to use it. By all means
they would like women too, but their market research most likely shows
that men are the primary users of such services. If you were to spend
millions of dollars on designing and running an ad campaign, would you
go against what the data is telling you simply not to "exclude" women?
It is my opinion that whatever needs to be done to maximize your ad
dollars is what should be done. It all comes down to what the highly
paid researchers come up with. Finally, if they get enough feedback
such as yours, they may change their strategy, so I think this is a
good letter.

But then again, I wouldn't want to see a guy on an Olay Body Ribbons
lotion commercial either.

Somehow, somewhere, there is a marketing person that told them this
was the way to go.

What about the cable guy and the technician? All men. I don't think
they'll ever attract women into these jobs if the media keeps showing
stereotypes.

Have you ever noticed that in floor cleaning equipment commercials (eg
Swiffer) it is always a woman cleaning the floor?

Interesting...

Their web site has both men and women.

In fact, it's one of those carefully thought out things where they
have various races, too.

Our FiOS bill is in my name! I think they are trying to appeal to the
men since they tend to be the more techie or gadget people. I don't
care if I have the latest and greatest and certainly don't need a
million channels. It was hubby's idea to get the top of the line
package. All I watch is USA, TNT and SciFi.

you'd be surprised then, there's a lot of techy girls out there :) by PepperElf Thu May 21, 2009 @ 12:14 PM

Perhaps the man is a stay at home dad (maybe taking care of the kids)
while mom is out working, that is pretty progressive in my book.

Obviously they did not want to follow the old worn out stereotype that
only women stay at home.

Good Day
