Verizon, Stop Reporting My Telephone Number!

In August 2005, I purchased a home which had Verizon as its phone service. As soon as I moved in, I kept the same telephone number but transferred the phone service over to Cablevision Optimum Voice.
For the past 2 years I have been getting increasing random phone calls from people looking for the previous owner. It turns out that phone books and online phone directories are still reporting the former homeowners name associated with my telephone number! I called Verizon, but they said they had no control over the telephone number and told me to call Cablevision. Of course, I called Cablevision and they said they don't print the number so I need to call Verizon!
I then spoke to a contact at the Yellow Book and she said that they get their directory listings from VERIZON.
At this point I believe Cablevision has nothing to do with this mistake. If you go to whitepages.com and do a search on the former homeowner, you get my number along with a disclaimer saying that the source is VERIZON!
Long story short, nobody at Verizon can figure out how to stop reporting my telephone number with the former owner's name. All they do is point fingers at everyone else but them. I spent 20 minutes on the phone with a supervisor of LI local phone service who pretty much told me "there's nothing we can do about it."
I find this extremely ridiculous and frustrating. Can SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I am sick of fielding calls for the former homeowner, and am actually thinking of taking some sort of legal action against Verizon.
STOP REPORTING MY TELEPHONE NUMBER WITH THE FORMER HOMEOWNERS NAME.
I WANT MY TELEPHONE NUMBER TO BE UNLISTED!

I would be pretty ticked if I were you. Verizon should change the listing for sure. Perhaps this is an issue you can take up with your public utilities commission. I'm not exactly sure what type of complaints they field though it's worth a shot. Good luck.
P.S. Next time... get a new number that hasn't been in use for a while. When you get a new number that has recently been used, you completely open the door to right number, wronge person calls.

It sounds to me like the OP kept his own phone number when he moved, not took on the previous home owners'.
In my town, you can actually look up phone numbers by the street address in the local phone book. For example, you can go to "E" for Elm Street, and it will list every resident of Elm Street in neumerical order by house number. I think this is what's happening to the OP. They didn't change the name associated with the address, just the phone number, so it's showing the old owner's name with Sean's address and phone number.
Not sure, though, so if you could clear this up, Sean, that would be great.

A while back, my grandmother kept getting calls at all times of the day and night. Asking for the same person and from the same person. Finally, she got ticked at the 3:30 am calls that she yelled into the phone "YES SHE'S HERE! SHE'S BURRIED UNDER THE PORCH AND IF YOU EVER CALL HERE AGAIN, YOU WILL BE TOO!" They NEVER called back. Not even after my brother took over the house and the number.
Change your number. Its not that big of a deal to change the number. Or you can just use my grandmothers trick!

I have a problem like this with my cell phone from Sprint. I have had various businesses and people calling me asking for someone named Paul or Tracey. It really gets on my nerves. Sometimes they don't believe me when I tell them they have the wrong number. If you find out anything from this letter, let us know; it may help me or someone else with the same problem! Good luck!

As everyone pointed out, you can't "unring the bell" now. The best solution seems to be to change your number.

Why in the world would you keep the former owner's telephone number? It's a little late to demand the number be unlisted, don't you think?
