Petty fees

I thought you should know why I recently disconnected a land phone line.

I have had a second land line in my home for a number of years. The purpose of this line was for incoming faxes. I have a very small business and I wanted the fax line to be separate for customers to fax in orders. The "basic rate" for this line is $8.45/month. However, add on all the fees and charges and taxes on the fees and charges and the line is costing $30 a month.

What I found particularly irksome was the "long distance shortfall" charge of $2/month which recently increased to $3.50/month. I am getting charged a fee (and taxes on that fee) for not making long distance calls on that phone line!

I was so irked that I decided I didn't need the separate fax line and I had it disconnected saving myself $360 a year.

That's what happens when companies get greedy - they lose business.

I like that you're telling them your complaint, and then telling them
how their policies cost them money when you changed/canceled your
service.

$9 a month just for a second phone line seems steep, but I'm annoyed
that I pay $35 a month just to have a landline (and did you know that
one of the taxes on your phone bill is from the Spanish-American
war?). Nutty.

When ordering local service, do not "PIC" a long distance carrier or
research and PIC one that doesn't charge monthly fees. You can choose
any LD carrier you want or opt not to have one. The only downside of
not having one is the inability to make long distance calls without a
calling card or using one of those 1010 services.

I have basic phone service in over 600 sites around the country with
all different carriers. We always use Sprint as our PIC.

I dont disagree that some companies put petty fees on their products
but scanning down phone bills most of them are governmental fees.
That is what happens when people allow government into the private
sector, they hit them fees and give them poorer service.

I'm not saying I agree with the fee but the rational behind it is that
Verizon (and other carriers) are maintaining a network that you can
make long distance calls on if needed. I think they should allow an
option of blocking all long distance calls and not charging a fee.
They could then allow access for LD at a higher rate by putting in a
code.

Exactly, Carol!! That's why I use only my cell phone. The
miscellaneous fees (many to support our friends in Washington, D.C.,
are amazing.
