Verizon's Unauthorized Usage of My Credit Card

Posted Fri October 23, 2009 12:00 pm, by Eugene F. written to Verizon Wireless (Cell Phones)

In the past six months Verizon Wireless has used my credit card without my permission. The first incident is now under investigation by the FCC, and the last two events occurred only a week apart. Verizon has admitted that these occurrences violate their service contract, and that, at an IT level, such unauthorized transactions should not even be physically possible.

They politely listened to my story and promised to call back. That was a number of days ago, and I have heard nada.

Two of these three unauthorized transactions caused my bank account to go into massive overdraft, costing me nearly $500 in aggregate. I live on a fixed Social Security disability income of slightly less than $900/month. Given this, a loss of $500 is catastrophic.

I would like Verizon Wireless to make good and reimburse me for this damage. If they don't I will file complaints with The California Public Utilities Commission; The US Postal Service (Interstate Wire and Mail Fraud); the FCC; and the Better Business Bureau. I will also file a small claims lawsuit in both Alameda and Santa Cruz Counties.

You can file a complaint with the PUC at the website of your state.
If utilities receive a certain amount of complaints to the PUC (Public
Utilities Commission) they will be fined Big Bucks. So keep on
complaining. And make sure you tell the utility you are filing a
complaint with the PUC and dispute the charges on your credit card as
this way you will not be charged late fees on the charges.

What did Verizon use your (I am presuming debit, not credit) card FOR?
Are they buying fancy lingerie or dining in nice restaurants? Or did
they do an auto-debit for money you owed them? Or something else? Your
letter does not state exactly what they took the money FOR.

You could take Verizon to small claims court for 5 grand. If they
don't show up, you automatically win. Just the summons will get their
attention. What bastards they are.

I'm guessing/assuming that you gave them your *debit* (not credit)
card info some time in the past, and now twice you have owed them
money, and they took it. Is that the case?

How does the use of a credit card cause an overdraft on your bank
account?
