Penalized for exercising rights with Verizon - Im getting the run around

Ive had a bill for $109 from an old closed account. I believed that I closed the account with a zero balance. A year or so later a collection agency starts hounding me for payment. I believed the bill wasnt mine and asked for copy of it and never received it. Stupid me, I just ignored it. While trying to refi house I realized this is my only collection/charge off/lien/judgment/etc on my records. No other bad mark. I contact Verizon and they send me copy of bill and I pay in full.

I then contacted executive relations to see if they would remove the item from my credit reports. Executive relations says they cant do that and only National Recovery has the power to do that. I contact National Recovery and they say only Executive Relations has the power to do that. I'm getting the run around.

The last time I called the CSR said that the Collection agency tried for a long time to collect the debt. I tried explaining to him that it was because they didnt send me needed information and that I contested the validity of the debt. They are now holding it against me that I didnt immeditely pay the collection agency when they called the first time.

Im being given the run around and being penalized for exercising my rights under federal collection act.

To remove the charge off from all three credit reporting agencies (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian).

I don't see where you were penalized for exercising your rights.

In fact I don't see ANY rights being exercised period. At least not
rights that actually exist.

You see the federal reporting act you're waving around... does not
state that marks have to be removed once the bill is paid.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre01.shtm

"When negative information in your report is accurate, only the
passage of time can assure its removal. A credit reporting company can
report most accurate negative information for seven years and
bankruptcy information for 10 years."

You are trying to claim this isn't accurate, however... you're going
about it the wrong way.

Just saying to the CSR "this isn't accurate" doesn't mean squat in
regards to the fair credit reporting act.

Review the link I posted - it will explain how to contest debts.

And remember, when you claim laws... be sure the laws actually support
what you're trying to claim.

they don't OWE you removal of a valid debt.

You admit that you ignored the situation until you needed your credit
cleaned up. That is exactly why credit reports are not SUPPOSED to
remove valid marks like this.

Creditors need to see that the good and the bad on your credit
history. Removing it would be dishonest by not letting them see
everything. You can't just eliminate the "oops" moments and leave a
glowing picture. That isn't how the system is designed to work.

As much as it sucks over such a minor amount, I bet you won't ever
ignore another debt again.

You also need to follow up to make sure it gets taken care of. You
cant just ask to see a bill and when they never send it just figure
"oh well".

They cant remove it from your credit report because they are not
allowed to. You failed to pay a bill so its correctly reported that
they had to go through collections.
