Verizon not verifiying a debt and inaccurately reporting to credit bureaus

I contacted Charlie Falco at Verizon Wireless by email on 3/8/12 regarding an entry I had just discovered on my credit report alleging a debt of $221 from an account opened in 2007 but listed as currently past due. I indicated I had no knowledge of this account and requested it be deleted or shown to be mine so that I could pay it.
I was immediately contacted by a woman named Chris who said she'd look into it. She then had another woman call me who was unable to even get my last name right (a very common one) but promised to send out documents proving it was my account. I waited two weeks and never received anything so I contacted Chris again.
After another week and a half of leaving messages, Chris finally returned my calls to say that she would, again, look into it. She said she was unable to tell me even how much the delinquent amount really was. She said this process could take as long as a week because the account was closed (despite it being reported on my credit as open) and had actually been an old Alltel account. But she said she would send me documents showing the amount owed and that would prove it was mine.
I then received a voicemail message saying that the account had been sold to a collection agency in August of last year. This, of course, has not stopped Verizon from still reporting it on my credit as a currently open revolving account of theirs, past due every month in the amount of $221. They re-aged the account once, from a date of last activity in 2008 to the current year and month when I originally disputed it with the credit bureaus, which is illegal.
They have yet to send me any paperwork for the account that shows the outstanding balance or that it is even mine. They are now reporting it as a collection account but will not let me pay off the account so that it at least will stop being a CURRENT account every month. I have been at this for 3 months since I first disputed it and still have no idea what this account even is!
I am ready to turn the whole thing over to my lawyer as this doing serious damage to my credit and Verizon is doing nothing to fix their mistake or prove that it's MY mistake so that I can fix it. I even had an account with them after this one is dated, but nothing was ever said about an outstanding balance.
I originally was checking my credit prior to picking out a new cellphone carrier, but I won't make the mistake of signing a contract with this company again if I can't even trust them to be able to identify and document what they say I owe them!
Delete this account from my credit reports if you are unable to verify its validity. If it is a valid debt, send me documents proving that the debt is mine and the amount owed. Correct my credit reports to accurately reflect the nature of the debt (NOT a revolving credit line currently open) and change the date of last activity that is being illegally reported back to 2008.

In short, after being a faithful customer to Verizon for 4 years, I switched to another company after my contract was thru. I moved around the same time they sent me my LAST bill. I didn't know about it until I bought a car a few months later, called Verizon to clear the charges, and was on my merry way. 5 years later, 2013 I am trying to buy a home and THIS THING with a 0 balance is impacting my ability to purchase a home. I've been dealing with this for days, just talking to anyone. And, they keep telling me it's a VALID credit inquiry. How how how do I remove this???? I'm becoming physically ill having to deal with this.

Verizon Wireless did this to me too!!!!!!! I actually just started a petition online. Please sign on! They cannot keep doing this to people. They made my credit score drop from a 714 to a 644! They are wrong!
Here is the URL for my petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/verizon-wireless-stop-ruining-people-s -credit-with-tainted-credit-reporting-practices
It's hard to contact them and even harder to dispute anything with the credit bureaus! They just need to stop!

If you have a credit dispute, I would contact each credit bureau individually either online or by phone to let them know you believe someone is fraudulently reporting information on your report. They should be able to look at it and see if there is any activity from a given entity.
You're allowed to pull a report yearly free at annualcreditreport.com from all three bureaus. Do that. It doesn't cost a thing, and it usually gets you a copy immediately. You can file disputes most times right online. The credit agency is then required to verify the information within 60 days, and if it cannot, it must remove any unsubstantiated or errant information. It's also a good chance to see what else is going on with your report to make sure all's well and correct it too...and thus improve your scores potentially.
Good luck.
