Data plans

After several years, I decided to upgrade my phone, knowing this would require another two-year contract. I signed into Verizon.com, indicated the phone I currently have, asked for a list of upgrades, and checked the box "compatible with your current data plan." At this time I do not have a data plan, nor do I wish one. I was given a list of about 60 phones. I did want a "smart" phone with the ability to access the web on an ad hoc basis. I chose the phone I wanted and then found out it is not, in fact, compatible with my current plan; I must sign up for a plan which will cost a minimum of $30 MORE than I pay now a month.

The rep I was chatting with online gave me a link the phones that actually would work without a data plan, and I was given a list of about six of the cheesiest phones available. None of them have a decent rating, and only ONE was a free upgrade.

I have never had any complaints about Verizon until now. I think this is a truly appalling way to do business.

With a long-term customer such as myself, you should make plans available that do not REQUIRE customers to take features they do not need -- at almost double the cost in order to get an upgraded phone

here's the problem

you don't want a data plan and you don't want to pay for your phone.

this means you're limited to the choice of free phones that don't
require data plans.

i know you don't like those options but... sometimes that's what
options you get.

if you want a phone that looks like a pretty data phone, you might
want to consider getting a pay-as-you-go phone. some of them look
like pretty data phones but they only cost 50-100 depending on what
you get.

but remember, they're not requiring you to do anything. it's just
that you're asking them for things that carry requirements you're not
willing to accept.

Sorry but you eventually must move along with techology. I loved my
AppleIIe when I had it, but it just would work in todays society.

I'm not aware of any carrier that doesn't require a data plan with a
smart phone.

Verizon has required data plans for smart phones for years now. I
don't know why you are surprised to learn that buying a smart phone
requires a data plan.
