I am so bothered and angered by verizon wireless. my blackberry curve has been problematic since day one (2/24/11). it's been replaced by a shoddy refurbished phone, and i'm stuck in a two year contract and can't do anything but keep accepting more crappy refurbished phones to replace mine. the battery wont hold a charge (i shouldn't have to walk around with 4 batteries...nor should i have had to pay for that many to ensure i have a working phone). sometimes, it just refuses to charge at all and dies and stays dead. sometimes the keys just don't work. does verizon wireless care? no, they do not. "oooooooooooooooooooooooooh. looks like it is time for you to get a new phone." does anyone else realize that that is how they *fix* their customers problems?? they never seem to be able to fix the phone...the customer just has to fork over more money. today, they suggested i add another number to the account to get a new phone. i asked who that phone was supposed to be for, my cat? i contacted them via their website as my phone was completely dead. i was bed-ridden all day with a nasty bug, so i couldn't even go to the store (where we all know they wouldn't be able to help me unless I was there to purchase a new phone....). i explained the issue to the employee. she told me to CALL customer service. i was like, "um i'm writing to you bc as i said, my phone is completely dead." i asked for the regional manager...she gave me her supe. NOT THE SAME. i asked him for the info for the regional manager....he said he couldn't do that. he even started internet yelling at me (you know....ALL CAPS!!!!!!!). um. seriously?? all i want is a working phone. i have an infant. what if he or i have an emergency?? i shouldnt have to have my computer booted up at all time, just in case i need someone and dont have a working phone! i dont want a used phone that was returned to them for NOT working! i dont want to have to pay an arm and a leg bc my contract isnt up until feb. i would like pleasant customer service, and a properly working phone!! all i hear are my friends complaining about their blackberries and their verizon service. hmmmmmmmmmmmm....i wonder why. i worked in customer service for years, and that is NOT how you treat customers. now i am in the medical field and would NEVER treat a patient like that.
i would like a new phone. not an old, refurbished phone. not another blackberry that doesnt work,or works when it feels like it. i would like to be able to purchase a phone at the "new contract price", and i will sign a new two-year contract. i really don't think that is too much to ask.

Even if the power is out... don't go using your landline if there's lightning in the area.
Mom took a shock back in the 70s. She reported it to the phone company and they laughed at her saying that it wasn't possible.
These days tho, they've pulled their heads out of their... hats... and advise that you don't use landlines during the storms.
and of course, if it's VOIP, or a cordless... yeah. no phones for you.
it's the one downside to using google voice /skype as my primary number.

This is why we won't give up our landline. Cell phones can break or get lost or do all sorts of weird things, we have a simple wall mounted phone with basic service as a back up.

Until cell phone technology catches up to landlines as far as recognizing where a call is originating from, I think households with children should have landlines, in case there's an emergency and a child picks up the phone and calls 911, but doesn't know the address, or is too freaked out to remember the address.

burn phones and landlines
IIRC I think NY may have "soft tone" laws in effect now - meaning that you can still dial 911 even if you don't have landline service.
Contact your local phone company or county clerk for details

If you truely are concerned that you won't have a phone in an emergency situation for your 13 month old, you should do what ever you need to to get a working phone. This could include finding a cheap (probably used) verzion phone that you can use until this is resolved. I have about 6 old phones sitting in my desk drawer at home. You can find them very easily on craigs list or ebay.

that the carriers are less than concerned with customer satisfaction, the problem you're experiencing is really with the Blackberry itself.
I'd try making a complaint to Rim as well since it's their crappy "smartphone" that is the problem. (And I had a Pearl and SIX Torches. The Pearls were OK, but I have nothing but issues with the Torch. I'm on Android now with a Motorola Atrix2 and it's better, but still not as reliable as it ought to be. All these manufacturers put out inferioir junk and charge top dollar for them!)
