To: Vonage Customer Care
From: Dennis Fox [dennis@penguinmaster.com]
Subject: Other

On February 23 I signed up for a new vonage account. I was promised a new router for free along with 1 month service. Today I got a charge to my credit card for 89.00 for the router. The invoice number is 19265411. I called Akib in New Jersey Employee 23159. This was a very unpleasant experience. I am very angry because of this switch and bait.

I expect a full refund of my 89.00 payment that was stolen from me. I want a credit put back on my card immediatly. This is a copy of my original invoice proving my case. I was to get a free router and 1 month service according to this email that was sent to me in confirmation.

If you look at the receipt, there is the router for $79.99 and a
refund for -$79.99. Add shipping, add an activation fee, add taxes -
we come to $42.34.

Where is the $89???

Respectfully, judging by the text in the letter "Switch and bait" ,
"$89 stole from me" that the letter writer seems to have a problem
with articulation... IOW ain't too swift.

That's quite a disconnect between your two comments. by Erik Wed March 29, 2006 @ 4:25 PM

Bait and switch involves a company promising a customer a particular
product at a particular price, usually in an advertisement of some
sort, then when the customer comes to the store or contacts the
company to purchase the item, they are told the item is no longer
available, but they are welcome to purchase another, usually more
expensive item, instead.

Now, that being said, here is the primary flaw in your letter:
You were not baited and switched. You received the item Vonage
offered at the price they were offering. I don't know if you called
Vonage or signed up on their website, but each router device on the
webpage I saw shows "PRICE AFTER REBATE" below each total. The $89
appears to be the cost of the router (79.99) and the shipping charge
(9.95). This means that you need to send your receipts in to get your
money back. I would guess at some point they would have had to
mention that if you called in and it is all in print on the website.

Also, more than likely, there are restrictions on how long you have to
submit the forms for the rebate, so if I were you, I'd get moving, or
you might actually get stuck paying the full price for your router.

As frustrating as it is to get charges you weren't expecting, you
can't go around blaming companies because you didn't read the fine
print.

What I see is a total of $42.34. Where is the $89.00 charge? If you
add the activation fee, the tax, the recovery fee, and the shipping
together, you get $42.34. So, whats the problem?
