Long distance for my next door neighbor to call me!

I have had Vonage service for a few months. I have been happy with the service.

Two weeks ago we moved to a new state. I changed my phone number with Vonage so that I would have a local area code. The process was easy.

A couple days later, I received a call from my daughter's school. They needed to reach me, but were unable to because they block long distance calls. They had to reach me by using a teacher's cell phone! After speaking with Vonage customer service, the result was that Vonage does not have any available local phone numbers for me! They suggested I pay extra for an 800 number. I want a local phone number, not an 800 number.

Now I have to notify everyone I know, again, that my phone number is going to be changing. I will have to switch to Time Warner, who has local VOIP numbers in order to have a home phone. Because I did not sign up for Phone when Time Warner installed my cable and internet services, I missed out on their promotion for discounted phone service. Time Warner VOIP is going to cost me double what I was paying for Vonage.

I would like a person with authority, (not the foreign customer service representatives) to quickly try to find me a local phone number. My Time Warner installation is scheduled for January 4, 2007. If a local number can not be found for me before then, I would like to be provided with a temporary FREE 800 number until I can get local service so that if my children's school needs to reach me, they can do so without a problem.

I would also like a refund for my local friends and family who now have long distance charges on their bill because I thought I was a local call. I would also like 2 months credit due to the additional charges I am incurring for choosing Vonage instead of Time Warner during their promotion time.

Long overdue update. Vonage foreighn customer service could not
understand that the number that they assigned me was a toll call even
though the area code was the same as my area. I began shopping for new
service packages that were included with Satellite TV packages. We
were at the mall and Dish TV was advertising a special in our area
that included, you guessed it, Vonage. I asked the rep how they were
offereing this package when Vonage did not have any area codes that
were local calls. The rep asked if I had heard that there was a new
area code assigned to our area because the primary area code had run
out of numbers. Surprised, I asked for that area code. Back at home, I
contacted Vonage and asked if they had any numbers with the new area
code.Foeign customer service was unable to help me. I asked to be
transferred to a supervisor in the USA. I was transferred to a
supervisor in who was able to find me a number with the new area code!
Yay!

I am happily using Vonage, with no problems one year later.

The phone number that I was given was in the right area code, however,
it was a toll call exchange.

After this inconvenience, I started checking with other providers. The
Dish Network had a table display set up at the mall and we stopped to
talk to them. They were offering satellite and Vonage for a low price.
I had to find out how they were offering Vonage in my area. They were
puzzled and said they had not heard that there were no longer numbers
available. Then one of the ladies mentioned that a friend of hers was
just assigned with the new area code in the city. I got the new area
code and called Vonage and had them check that area code. I was
finally able to get a number for my part of the city. My service has
continued and is great. The only annoying problem is that whenever I
give my number to someone, they say "Where is that"? It is news to
everyone that there is a second area code starting up.

While reading the letter, I had the same question that others have
had. Why were you able to change your number to a local area code and
still be considered long distance? Before anyone is able to dial a
long distance number, aren't they alerted that they dial a 1 and the
area code? The only thing that would make sense to me is if you had
mistakenly selected the wrong area code.

In any case, the request for a free 800 number, a refund for friends
who have long distance charges and additional two-months of credit is
rather, well, just simply nuts. It's way over the top and makes no
sense of any sort. If you're going to change providers, they're not
going to pay for that to take place.

You should consider a rewrite, accepting the incorrect area code
problem, if it was indeed your mistake. I would leave out the request
for 'free-bees' and simply explain that you'll need to make a change
because of the unavailability of numbers.

Sorry to hear this happened. What I don't understand is what they
told you that your number would be when you moved. I'm assuming it
was within the right area code, but the exchange was a "toll" call.
Is that it?

Sounds like they don't have local numbers, so I'm going to guess that
they won't find you one. Given that you're no longer a customer, I'd
be surprised if they "gapped" you.

I feel for your situation... they should have told you that the number
they were assigning to you wasn't a local number. But I think this is
what happens with these services. They aren't the phone company, so
they don't have to serve every area.

I am confused, first you say you changed your number so you would have
a local area code, then you say you called vonage and they didn't have
any local numbers.

When you changed your number, were you not told what your new number
was? If so was it a local area code? If it was find out what
happened to that number. If it wasn't then you should have known that
the number wasn't changed.

If they don't have them, they don't have them. Go with the company
that does.
This is why I don't have Vonage. Vonage doesn't have local numbers
for my area, so I went through my cable company. Same service, local
customer service, local workmen, usually any repairs/changes are done
within 24 hours.
