ANYOTHER store would require a reciept. And if I paid nearly $80 for something you had better BELIEVE I would keep my receipt. In fact MOST stores charge a 15% RESTOCKING fee on returns. Wal-Msrt doesn't do that. But maybe they should. Shoppers maybe a little more selective it the did.
As for Requiring a receipt, umm no that is not a new policy, at least not for the last 15 years or so.

I'll buy the bedspread from you if I can get a receipt with it should I want to return it at a later time.

"I called several area Wal-Mart stores to inquire about the return policy and some said they would accept the return and some did not."
So why didn't you take it to another area store that would accept it without the receipt?
Whatever the case, keep your receipts. Its not that difficult to put them in an envelope in a drawer and then go through them every few months and remove the outdated ones.
(when I first became a PFB member years ago, another member suggested to do this and I have ever since.)
I am not looking forward to the post holiday season...maybe PFB can put a huge banner on their site reading to SAVE ALL RECEIPTS!

You know the return policy because the CSM at the front desk told you what it was. The policy on their website clearly states you need a receipt to return things. Why, then, if it so clearly states you need a receipt should they have to turn around and post that you cannot return things without a receipt. Wouldn't that be a little redundant? But I guess maybe they should post it for the "incredibly RUDE, thoughtless and uneducated" people that shop at their stores so those people won't have to waste their time and everyone else's calling various stores to try to find a way around their policies.

So, take it to one of the ones that said they would and get the credit.
If you had any doubt at all the bedspread wouldn't work out you should have kept the receipt. I do this occasionally - buy stuff I may not be able to use - and stash the receipt safely away.
An educated consumer knows that it is always best to keep receipts.

What is so hard about saving a reciept. It is your proof of purchase.
Had that receipt and you would of had a credit or cash back.
Not saying you did this but people do use stolen credit cards, shoplift as others have said, and even use worthless checks.
Receipt protects you and the store!

Requiring a receipt for a return is not a new policy for any retailer, it's just that most are enforcing it more stringently lately. I know Target and Toys R Us have gotten just as strict.

Here is the exact wording of their return policy: Everything in the store can be exchanged or refunded with a receipt within 90 days of purchase... with the exception of a few electronic items and regulated items.
The conclusion I would automatically draw is that if I don't have a receipt, I can't make the return or exchange. But I can see where the policy might be a little nebulous especially considering you called several different stores and got different answers at each one. And I think in today's age, stores need to be as crystal clear as possible (even if it means stating the obvious) so there is absolutely no doubt in a consumer's mind on the store's policies.
I also agree with Redhead below that you're going to be seeing a lot more stores requiring receipts for returns, so make sure going forward you save them.
And, no, I don't need a bedspread. :)

...you resorted to insults.
Why do people do this? They take a perfectly good letter and turn it to crap by adding insults. To state that they were rude is okay and thoughtless is pushing it...but uneducated and ignorant...that's not okay.
How I wish I could be a manager somewhere...I'd immediately turn any request down if someone started hurling insults.

The return policy on the web says they always need a receipt:
walmartstores.com/7737.aspx
I suppose various stores might be varying from this (to the dismay of their senior management).
I know that the corporate CS departments of many places (or even at the store level at Target) are able to pull up a duplicate of the receipt. I'm not sure if WM can do the same.

...or you can realize that more retailers, including Walmart, are starting to require receipts for returns (in order to fight theft/shoplifting), and start hanging onto them for your returns. Sometimes, I simply scotch-tape a receipt to the item so they stay together until I get back to the store.
