My son and I were shopping in your store located in Methuen Massachusetts, store # 3491. I was shopping in your hardware department while my eighteen year old son Scott, who has down syndrome, browsed in your DVD section. When I returned to your electronics department, one of the store managers, Matt was interrogating my son. I happened to be wearing my military uniform as I was home on leave. I asked if there was a problem. Matt told me that I should let him handle store issues and suggested I go find my platoon. Matt started interrogating my son again. I stood and listened for a moment. Matt turned to me and asked me if I had a war to fight someplace then he again explained to me that he was in charge of the store and told me that he didn't need a Boy Scout. I told him that I was Scott's dad and Matt explained to me that his store had a policy in place regarding children requiring adult supervision while in the store. I explained to him that my son is eighteen years old and is very much able to do things for himself as well as by himself. Matt argued that Scott does not fall into the average mainstream category. The conversation ended with Matt instructing us to leave his store and never return. Matt explained that his store was in place to serve the needs of normal decent people with good moral standing. He told me that there were other options for people like Scott.

I filled out an ADA complaint against this store and filed it with the state of Massachusetts.

I think my family is owed an apology, and this manager should be required to do some community service with disabled people as a condition of continued employment. No I don't want him terminated because he will not learn anything from it .

The disdain to the US military aside ("Don't you have a war to fight?"
"I don't need a boy scout!") this guy was a DOUCHEBAG with a CAPITAL
D!!!!!

Personally, as much I think this guy should kiss both you and your
son's posteriors, I wouldn't want them to waste the breath on an
apology - it would just be complteely insincere!

Nice that good 'ol WalMart hires such fine examples of American
respect and values! Just one more reason for me NOT to shop there!!

Wow - this guy Matt sounds like a real jerk and somebody who should
NOT be in management.

WalMart should re-consider his position, demote him and make him take
sensitivity training. He's lucky I'm not his supervisor of I'd do
exactly that to him.

Not only does WalMart owe you an apology, Matt owes both you and your
son an apology as well.

I sincerely hope Matt has a child with special needs if he ever has
kids. That - and really only that - will teach him compassion,
kindness and decency towards those with disabilities.

Best wishes to you and your son. I really hope the nasty and
uncalled-for treatment you received didn't damper your time home on
leave.

And thank you, Farley, for your service! I - and the rest of the
American populace - owe you a debt of gratitude.

Wow. Just, wow. With a manager with that lack of character and
sensitivity, I bet his employees hate him.

Matt sounds like the congressman who recently had to leave office
after saying people like your son should be put in siberia and left to
freeze to death.

I have a disabled child and had anyone spoken to him like that, I
cannot imagine that I would have had your self-restraint.

I agree with the others ~ contact someone in the media. I would also
contact someone at Wal-Mart regional management. This is bigger than
a store issue.

Good luck to yo.

foot in this Wal-Mart again.

I agree with the posters below. Contact your local media--radio, TV,
newspapers.

Thank you for serving our country.

letter to the editor in your local papers, the community needs to know
how you and your son were treated!

First I would like to thank you for your service to our country.
Second I would like to applaud you on your restraint and not just
knocking the crud out of this so called "human being" Matt. Don't know
if I could have restrained myself. I hope Walmart does something about
this employees behavior but I doubt they do. This just gives me one
more thing to add to my list of why I boycott Walmart. So sorry this
happened to you and your son.

WOW! can you say "powertrip"? This manager has no business managing a
store if he is going to treat customers this way. How does downs
affect "good moral standing", and what place does this manager have
preaching "morality" to a member of the military?

His comments about your military service are despicable at best, this
occuring in massachusetts is not exactly surprising to me.

IF he should be allowed to stay in walmart, he needs to be transferred
to a store in a military town, and demoted to greeter, if he hates the
military that much let him put on a smile and greet and thank each and
every serviceman/woman who comes into or leaves the store.
