Write a Letter to this Company | Rate this Company
Hi,
My name is Jenna Thomas. This is my second letter along with numerous phone calls to the Wal-Mart store that I went to. First of all, this is how it begins, I recieved a gift card from my company to Wal-Mart and was excited to use it, so I looked up the closet one to my work-which is Shelia Lane in Richmond Va. I went in to the store trying to find a Julian Michaels DVD and stepper. So, I went to the DVD section and first asked a lady in there to help me find the DVD, she looked at me with a death stare, and rudely responded, "they are in sporting goods section, and sacastically pointed in that direction." Well, I went to the sporting goods section, no luck, so I asked a boy around, I said, "excuse me, could you please help me..." Before I could finish the question he said, "I CAN ONLY HELP YOU IF THIS IS A MUSIC QUESTION, I AM WORKING MUSIC TODAY." I said well, "could you at least point me in the write direction." He responded, "ALL I CAN TELL YOU IS THE DVDS START THERE" and pointed int that direction. At this point I was so mad I put my other few items back and left the store without purchasing a thing. After I left I called the store and asked to speak with a manager and I was on hold for 8 minutes and then the girl who answered the phone hung up on me. I then proceeded to call back but noone would answer, strange huh? After that I got on Wal-Mart's web-site and wrote a complaint letter to generic customer service. A couple of days letter I recieved a call from one of the store managers at the location where I went. I was not home and she left a message with someone at my house and told them that she would be there until 9pm to please have me call. I called when I got home which was around 7 pm and then girl that picked up the phone said, "we don't have a manager here mam, you will need to try back some other time." I just did not have the energy to fight with this rude and carefree employees! I have made a vow to myself that I am boycotting WAL-MART! I will never go there again, and now I can see why they only cater to a certain "class" of people!!!!!!! The employees need the fast track to customer service!!!!!!!!
nothing but train the employees are get rid of the ones they have and hire new ones!!!!!!!!!!

When it comes to Wal-Mart I have a "rule of thumb". If I need something where I might have to talk to someone I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I only go there if I know exactly what I need and know exactly where it's at in the store. Then I'm in and out. Wal-Mart and Customer Service do not exist together in the same retail universe.

I'm amazed at how many people hate walmart! I have never had a problem, maybe it's just luck because all these people can't be wrong! I'm more of a target person anyway!

I flipped on a Walmart cashier last week, she was ignorant, didn't say a word only to tell my seven year old really rudely "Don't mess with that!" when he touched the round thing the bags are on. Needless to say I caused a scene, told her she should not be working with people if she hates them so bad, it goes on and on. I put her in her place, in front of all the huge lines. I could tell she was embarassed and ashamed of her behavior. You need to put nasty people like this in their place. You can complain after the fact, sure, but that never gets you nowhere. I get more satisfaction out of confronting the nasty clerk. I treat them the same way they treat me. I don't take it, like you seem to do. I'm not saying you should have been yelling(my PMS was to blame too) but you need to stand up for yourself in front of these ignorant you -know-whats. I hope you get a response.

you could always sell it on ebay or one of the sites that lets you sell/swap gift cards. Or, if you don't really need the money, you could donate it to the local homeless shelter, pet shelter, etc. They would LOVE to get it.Then you would have a good warm fuzzy feeling instead of the agita that walmart specializes in producing (I hate it too..)

Rude, rude, rude. Especially in the auto department. And always long lines at the checkout.
They just build a new Target down the street. I wonder how that cut into their business.

WalMart. Nothing else is necessary to state. In the future just toss the gift card in the garbage without using it.

While I'm not condoning you choice of words when it comes to "certain class". I think you all need to let up on the girl. Shes frustrated and has a right to be. Who on these message boards doesnt get diarrhea of the mouth every once in awhile when they are worked up?
And I actually do see your point. While I'm not saying that everyone who shops at Wal-mart is a sumbag, one of my major reasons, among others, for not shopping there anymore is the people who patron my local store. While trying to keep very aware of the words I'm using, I would much rather go to a store where I don't hear mothers screaming at their children for misbehaving or children throwing temper tantrums because they arent getting a new toy. As unsensitive as it seems, I'm single with no children and make a decent living wage. Its my choice to go somewhere where these people are less likely to be and that is what I would rather do.

Walmart employees are only trained to work in their areas. If you are hired to work in pets you work in pets, and have no idea about the rest of the stock. I wouldn't be able to help you as I don't even know who Julian Michaels is.
That being said, I was with you until the *certain class* of people line. I am a working, married, mother of 2. I am 28. I shop at Walmart exclusively, minus a few trips a year to Target. I put back things that I look at, I refold shirts if they were folded. I have only returned 2 items in my life. A double Christmas present and a pair of shoes from my job that fell apart after a week. So what *class* of person does that make me. Oh yeah, and I never give sales associates attitude because they weren't trained to properly do their jobs either.

I'm not a big fan of Walmart in general. For what it is, one can't beat Walmart for prices. It's no big secret that Walmart does whatever possible to provide those low prices, including documented cases of using questionable employment practices and tactics.
We have to be mindful, as consumers, that employees deserve some kind of respect because there's dignity in all work. The fact that they have no incentive whatsoever to go the extra mile is what Walmart is all about. If it's going to change, we have to change our expectations. While your service was poor, it should have been taken up with the manager at the time you were in the store. Calling them names in a letter just takes away from your issue.
Could the manager have been making a deposit at the time you called? If they close at 9 and are busy, it's a possiblility a call back in a few minutes could have gotten results.
My experience has been that most Walmarts I've visited have a seperate section clearly marked and seperated by counters and security monitors for electronics and dvd's, video games, controllers, etc.in locked cases and open displays. With "bargain and soecials" outside that area. The aisles are also clearly marked with signeage.
We aren't talking about Van Cleef and Arpel or Saks Fifth Avenue, we're talking about bargain shopping at Wally world. Your issue is valid and there's plenty of room for improvement, but disrespecting them and boycotting their store isn't giving them incentive to change or to help.
Would you be willing to give them another chance to make it right? Perhaps a different approach?

Up until the last couple lines, I was thinking this was a pretty decent letter. No call for firing of all employees, no demand for gift cards, several attempts to speak with the manager, etc, but the last bit kinda killed it for me.
I live in an area where Wal-Mart is pretty much the only option we have unless we want to spend 4 times our budget in gas and increased prices. Thankfully, the Wal-Marts in my area are clean and well-stocked, as well as being staffed by good and decent employees. I guess we are just a 'certain class' of people and don't expect any better.
All that being said, it sounds like a local issue. I've seen enough nasty managers to know that the attitude you recieved is often a sign of managers cracking down hard on employees being 'out of zone'.
Keep trying and for the sake of that 'certain class', rethink your attitude.

You should go back to pursuing a manager. You gave up and wrote this letter to corporate, which I am not sure is going to accomplish much. The employees were pointing you in the right direction, but you found fault in the way they spoke to you. That is a local issue.
If you really want something to change at that WalMart, go back or call until you get a hold of a manager. Do it and get it over with. I wouldn't harbor a lot of heartache over this. It deserves to be brought to that store management's attention, but this isn't something you should lose sleep over.
