Poor treatment at Walgreens pharmacy

I called to ask a pharmacist at Walgreen's in Pittsburg, KS about alternatives to a medication that I am taking since my insurance company won't pay for it any more. I wanted to do some homework before I saw my doctor to get my prescription changed. I talked to a pharmcist named Sam who said he didn't have time to answer questions, that I should just go to my doctor and that he wasn't in the business of giving free advice. Gee, I thought pharmacists are there to help give you information about the drugs you are taking. I later picked up another prescription at Walgreens and when Sam overheard my name at the pickup window, he told the other pharmcist that I was the du@!a$$ that he "put off" on the phone and they both had a little laugh at my expense (well I guess at Walgreens' expense since I won't be doing business with them any more). Also, they have the absolute slowest drive thru in town. You can pull up to the window and they will completely ignore you to the point that I see people leaving after waiting without a reply for 10 minutes or so. They could at least greet you and tell you that it will be a few minutes. Just all around poor customer service and treatment. Staff doesn't even try to act like they care about their customers.

Monitor their pharmacy in Pittsburg, KS, train them to provide acceptable customer service and have a talk with "Sam".

Walgreens is always super helpful at the Pharmacy when I have a
question about a medication I am interested in. If I show them the
prescription, they will tell me an alternative to ask the doctor for,
that might be cheaper than what I was prescribed.

The employee probably could have handled themselves better, but not
really sure why you would want the advice of a pharmacist instead of
your doctor.

I note - Sam didn't say he couldn't, by law, give the OP the
information he requeted. He said he didn't have time. That makes it
seem like he could have answered the OP's questions but elected not
to. And elected not to in an extremely unprofessional manner.

I agree with PepperElf in that the pharmacist probably cannot, by law,
give you the information you were looking for.

However, that being said, he handled this extremely unprofessionally
and I hope Walgreens takes action accordingly.

Wow. I think he should be fired. Calling you a name -- especially
within earshot of you and any other customers -- is a deal breaker in
my book.

You actually summed it up, the pharmacist is there to provide you with
information about the drugs you are taking. If you are looking for
alternatives, you need to see your doctor.

Pharmacy laws vary by state but in most cases, telling you about
alternatives is considered practicing medicine without a license and
is something they can't do.

I do think Sam could have handled this in a much more professional
manner and I believe that should be the heart of your complaint.

The pharmacist is there to to the following

1) Fill a prescription
2) Warn you of any interactions - i.e. what you can and cannot take
your meds with
3) Contact your doctor if there's something wrong with the
prescription
4) Contact your doctor to verify the prescription
5) Contact your insurance to go over the paperwork

The pharmacist CANNOT - by LAW - give you the information you are
asking him for.

Not without risk to his license or his job.

Basically... Walgreens will not punish Sam. They cannot punish the
pharmacist for refusing to break the law.
