Problem employee in Las Vegas

On June 29, 2012 at around 4:20 I went into Walgreens on N. Buffalo and Lake Mead in Las Vegas to pick up a few things. When I was checking out the cashier said "How are you young lady? I'm a 52-year old woman - I dress appropriately and act my age, so I wonder what's up with that but I smile and go about swiping my card and he continues " why the smile young lady, aren't you 25-years old?" Okay - this is getting really annoying but I continue with my purchase. One of the items was a pack of gum and he points to a display of Mentos gum and said "wouldn't you like to trade your gum - this gum doesn't get caught in your dentures." I have no idea what possessed this young man to verbally abuse and humiliate an unsuspecting customer but you can be sure that I will NEVER go into another Walgreens again. Rite Aid - I'm back.

If I were the manager I would fire him. I'm a psych nurse and in my never to be humble opinion you have yourself a huge liability. This isn't a training issue - it's a personality flaw. Bad habits you can correct. Personalities - not so much.

Short of firing, I would tell him to keep his mouth shut when checking out customers.

Were not cute. Were not funny.

Were not malicious. Were not verbally abusive.

Just inappropriate & STUPID.

Humor in the workplace can be a good thing when needed, but you have
to make sure that what you are saying is aproppriate for the current
situation. He did not do that. Plus from what I read, there was no
need to even be humorous.

I just hope that the OP does not feel that EVERY Walgreens employee is
like this.

This employee sounds OBNOXIOUS. I hate when service people think
they're flattering older people by acting like a 70yo is a teenager.
It's not flattering, it's rude and disrespectful. And then the
dentures comment?

This kid should be fired because he's a pain in the ass.

How do you figure his personality and not his actions is the cause for
this?

Unless you personally know him I would find it hard to determine that
his personality itself was the issue.

I cannot believe that everyone is defending the young man in this
instance. When I cashiered I knew how to be pleasant and respectful,
this was anything but. I think customers have a right to be treated a
certain way. A smile, a "How's your day going?" or something equally
pleasant and impersonal. To purposely point out that this woman looks
like she's 25, and then speak to the dentures she may or may not
have...ridiculous. He's clearly got a really distorted sense of
humor, or he's making fun of her. Either way it's completely
inappropriate in this instance.

The only thing I would have changed had I been in this situation and
been angered at what was said...would have been to speak with the
manager right then and there or called the manager once I had calmed
down.

Maybe that's why he mentioned the Mentos gum?

While I get what everyone is saying, I do believe in retail there's
appropriate customer conversation and inappropriate conversation.

If you have a customer who has been coming in a long time, and has
shared details of their life (personal stuff), then personal
conversations may be o.k. (within limits) -- how are the kids, how's
it going with your diabetes meds, etc.

If you've never seen a customer, appropriate stops at general
conversation -- how are you, you look like you're having a great day,
how can we help, etc.

Someone needs to explain it to this young man. Talking to a stranger
about her alleged dentures is a bit over the top, and age jokes can
easily backfire.

I too do not see what the cashier said as abusive or humiliating.

If you are THAT upset, perhaps it might be a good idea for you go back
to that Walgreens & speak to the store manager about the incident.

Like what was said below, it seems every other day we see a complaint
about an employee ignoring a customer, then one who talks too much.

I think the denture comment was going a bit far, but otherwise it just
sounds like he was trying to be cute or funny. I dont see anything
malicious about it. Should I get mad everytime the 18 year old
cashier calls me sir? or the 80 year old calls me hun?
