How bout this, get off your duff and visit the store. Dress appropriatley, have a resume, and be thankful you made some sort of contact. Follow up in a few days and show gratitude. Too few jobs around to be so "disturbed" and make suggestions prior to your hiring.

Do you really want to work for a company that behaves this way? Or that is managed this way?
Maybe this is a good omen for you.

I once applied to Sam's Club and... *THEY* called me back. I didn't have to try calling them up to find out about the job.
Most likely they aren't taking calls simply because it's the same thing... if they want to hear from you, they'll call you.
Many management teams don't want potential employees calling them up, asking about the job simply because of a few factors
1) They're often busy with the job - perhaps even assisting a *Paying Customer*
2) They may not have your resume / application right in front of them. Especially if they're busy with #1. So they may not know who you are even, or what your specific employment status is.
3) They may have decided not to hire you. Some companies will call or email you to say "no thanks" but some simply say "If you don't hear back, then you didn't make the cut."
In which case, they might not want to discuss the reason why. It could be because they don't want to have to explain themselves, or argue over it. And it could also be # 1 or #2
If you still want an answer, I'd suggest popping over to the store in person to ask for a manager.
Don't ask the manager what your employment status is. They might not know really.
Instead ask this
- What is the hiring procedure?
- When is a good time to come in to talk to a manager about your submitted application.
This way it puts the ball in their court. You're not demanding an answer on why they haven't called back. You'll just be asking about the procedure. Pretty much it keeps things professional, and on a non-confrontational level, which is more conducive towards getting an answer.
Or you might ask an employee the same thing - well the hiring process at least. I know at my last job customers would ask me on that and I'd tell them the truth... Apply on line and you'll get a call back if they want to interview you.
And it's very possible that walmart is the same way.
