$11 shirt ends up costing over $15

My mother-in-law passed away recently. My husband and I purchased a dress shirt from Walmart for the funeral. Due to time being an issue my husband didn't try on the shirt until we got home where he found it to be too small. I said, "No problem, I will get up early in the morning an exchange it." Early the next day I returned to Walmart to do an exchange. Since I was only exchanging for a larger size I didn't expect to have any problem at all. I knew I would have to pay $2 more for the larger size but that was okay with me.
I go to customer service with the larger shirt and the lady asks for my receipt. Unfortunately, this was the one receipt I didn't have in my purse. She said that was okay, she would just take care of it there. She proceeds to scan the tag and the register says I owe a little over $6. I ask how can that be when the original was $9 and the difference between the two was only $2. She said that since the shirt had gone on sale for $5 I now had to pay the difference. I protested that I had already paid $9 and I thought it was stupid that I be charged an additional $6 and whatever for the larger size. Shouldn't the larger size be only $7 since the sign above them said larger sizes cost $2 extra?!!! I was told that since I didn't have my recipt that I could either pay the extra or return with the receipt and prove that I had paid $9 for the shirt. Since this was something that was needed at this time and the funeral was that morning I paid the extra $6 and change in order for my husband to be able to attend his mother's funeral, but I am still fuming. An $11 shirt ended up costing over $15. I was soooooo upset with all this. This just added to an already extremely stressful situation.
The customer service lady said that is why I should always keep my receipt. I usually do keep all my receipts but this time I didn't because I was trying to clean out everything because of this family death.
Now, don't get me wrong, the lady was very nice about it, but it didn't help the situation for me at all.
I went back to Walmart later and the shirts were still tagged as $9 and $11 for the larger sizes.
This is just one example of many others as to why I am really taking a huge dislike to Walmart. I am truly considering travelling 25-30 minutes away to do any shopping in order to keep from giving Walmart anymore of my money.
I would like for Walmart to refund the extra $4 and change that I paid for a shirt that would have cost $11.

Your husband wore an $11 shirt to his mother's funeral. Shouldn't his mother be the one complaining? LOL

I have a couple of different thoughts about this letter.
First, I know that typically a return without receipt is refunded at the current selling price, sale or not. However, many stores have a "return without receipt" price that is different and much lower than a posted floor price. I know for a fact Target does because I've run into this issue myself there.
Although the associate said the shirt you originally purchased was "on sale", I think what have actually happened was that you were being refunded the "return without receipt" price. I say this because a) Usually the style of shirt is on sale, not the size, and b) The posted signs above the shirts did not have the "sale price" quoted by the cashier.
Frankly I think the practice of having one floor price and a "return without receipt" price is ridiculous. I understand that without a receipt the store has no proof that you paid what you claimed, and I completely support refunding the item at the current selling price, but having two different prices seems overly punitive.
Second, someone below mentioned Walmart has the same policy as Target where they can look up your transaction via credit/debit card. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, I'm wondering why the associate didn't offer this option to you. Anytime I've forgotten my receipt at Target (not often, but it has happened), the cashier has offered to look up the transaction for me. I can tell you that it has saved me a ton of hassle.
Let us know if and how Walmart responds to your letter.

First of all, sorry for the loss of your loved one.
This seems to be a common pratice with Walmart. I had a similar experience happen to my mother and I about 15 years ago. Mom had bought my girls some clothes on sale and she bought the wrong sizes. She bought them on a Saturday, gave them to me on a Sunday and on Monday we went to exchange them for the correct sizes. They wanted us to pay the price difference on the exchanged items because they were no longer on sale. But when we refused and asked for a refund for the items, they told us they would give us a store credit but not the cash back because the items had been on sale. Confused the hell out of me. We ended up taking our clothes and receipt back. I went home and was able to get ahold of the district manager and let him know of my problems. He had me go to a different store in the city where I worked, where they gladly exchanged the items. I did not step foot in a Walmart after that for 13 years(until they built a super center 4 miles from my house)and when I go I only buy dog and cat food. So hopefuly, if the right person gets this letter, your issue will be taken care of. Good luck.

That's weird...you were doing an even exchange really and I think you should have just been charged the difference because of a larger size. At my store, we take the lowest sale price if there is no receipt, but if it's an exchange for a different size, we adjust the price so it comes out evenly.
I don't know how Wally World's system works, but it doesn't make sense that they couldn't override the price and make it very close to an even exchange. If you had your receipt and were exchanging the shirt, wouldn't you have been refunded the difference because of lower sale price anyway? Why did they hassle you so much over something so silly? Strange...

Walmart, like many other retailers, will only refund/exchange for the lowest sale price within a certain amount of days (usually 30) if you return an item without a receipt. This is what happened in your case. How did you pay for the original purchase? If you used a credit card, they can look up the transaction in the coputer at the service desk using the card number. If you paid cash, there is nothing they can do to look up the original purchase.

If the one you had purchased was now on sale, wouldn't the larger size ALSO be on sale, meaning the difference really should still be only $2?

If you do not have a receipt showing how much you paid, they look at the lowest price in the last xx number of days. The shirt may have gone on sale, and then off sale in that time.
They have no way of knowing if you bought the shirt at the lower sale price.
I think you will find this same policy at many retailers, not just Walmart. On a completely different note, not shopping at Walmart is probably a great move.

Why didnt you go to the rack and grab the shirt showing the correct price when you were told the price was going to be different?
You should always keep your receipts and records. My wife takes care of that system. We use the shoe box method and keep every water bill, receipt, and keep it for 10 years. More if it is an electronic device etc.
This has proven very handy over the years.
Good Day
