Getting rid of door greeters, the only reason I would even walk into a WalMart store, I spend more time talking with a door greeter, than shopping, they are a stable for Walmart, you could get rid of the half-assed managers, because everyone knows you dont have any sales floor help, you have really hit rock bottom now, and I dont mean prices either, I shop Dollar Stores, and your clothes are crap, your food is tainted, this is not what Sam Walton had in mind when he started his empire, if only your CEO's had half the retailing knowledge that Sam had , it might be worth my time to shop there.
I personally am starting a petition to bring back the Door Greeters and I think you should take action immediately to restore this , for lack of other words, assinine decision

I have a Family member that wears the title of People greeter. They do about everything but that. They put up returns, wash windows, sweep the floor, pick up trash, gets carts, give directions and more. They still get paid as the people greeter which 4 or 5 years ago was just that, to greet customers. My Family member has been cussed out numerous times when asked to see the receipt and works as hard as anyone in the store. She would be very happy to "greet people" and not have to be a custodian, maintenance man, stock person and other things too. Wal-Mart needs to get back to what got them where they are today.

Door greeters are there not only to smile at people, but they are loss prevention employees. They see the people who walk in and out with merchandise. You walk in with something, they tag it so that nobody thinks you stole it so you can return it. So that's doing you a favor. That said, I would not stop for them if the door beeper thing went off if I hadn't stolen anything since they have no authority to require you to show your receipt or to check your bags since they were not witness (via any 5-point security surveillance system most stores use) and you did not sign a membership (like with Costco) in which you gave them permission to stop you to do that.
They are, however, a deterrant to the rampant shoplifting that goes on there. For that, I'm happy they are there to keep them a little deterred and prices a little lower. They won't stop the hard core theif, but will keep the honest person honest.
As for your "tainted" food comment, every store has some instance of food problems...so I don't understand how you can make such a generalization. I don't like Wally World either, but won't say that.

First of all, before you try to bash a position make sure you have the facts. The employees you speak of are people greeters, you can not very well greet a door.
The fact of the matter is that the position is going to be restrucured so that they can FOCUS on greeting people. No longer will they have to put a 'sticker' on your item you bring in to return, they will not have to ask for a reciept while you exit the store nor will they have to concern themselves with the condition of the entrance. Their sole purpose in life will be to greet every customer and to assist in pointing them in the right direction if/when needed.
As to your 'tainted' food...please post your proof. For in all reality Wal-mart sells the same food every other retailer has access to from the respective manufacture's supply, only the sell it cheaper. No sales floor help? You may be right at times, with society moving at an ever increasing speed it may appear as if there are not enough people to serve you RIGHT when you want help, but they are most likely right around the corner helping someone else and they will be right with you when they are done.
Have a plesent day!

The Walmart stores where I live are a joy to shop in. Good selection, good prices. Helpful staff. If you don't like the stores ... go somewhere else.
Store greeters are not just there to greet people. They are also another layer of security to prevent shoplifting. If the greeters are the ONLY reason you shop there ... well, what can I say.

Door greeters serve a very specific purpose: they make Walmart more... "friendly", for lack of a better term, to a specific portion of their customer base. I agree that most of the door greeters that work at my local Walmarts do not serve their purpose: they do not greet customers, they do not help customers, they do not even make eye contact with the customers. For the most part they just shuffle shopping carts back and forth and chat with other Walmart employees.
People who actually take the time to smile and chat with the customers as they walk in the door are well worth Walmart's payroll dollar IMHO. It is just that most of the people assigned to that position do not have the necessary people skills, or simply do not have any interest in doing a halfway decent job.

Personally, I would rather they spend the wages on an extra cashier or two than someone who just stands there all day and says hi to people that don't really care. The only reason I shop at Walmart once in awhile is the prices. I never ask a sales clerk for assistance because I don't need it. If the item I want is not on the shelf, I don't ask if it is in the backroom. The only thing I do care about at Walmart is waiting in long lines at the registers when they only have 2 or 3 cashiers on duty on a weekend.
