Address the Lack of Adversity, Walmart

As a long time Walmart shopper, it is always my first stop for Christmas toys. With six daughters, 3 nieces, 4 goddaughters and a host of other young female relatives and friends, dolls are always high on my list. I can say that for almost last 15, I have bought literally hundreds of dolls from Walmart. Even though I am Black, I have never had a problem finding dolls that represent my heritage to choose from. Many stores do not get my business because the lack of diversity in their toy aisle.

I was flabbergasted tonight when perusing the doll aisles at the #2063 store and there was only ONE doll of color. That was a BRATZ Hair Torso Doll, Sasha. That is not even a 2008 Christmas toy. There was a display of 25 2008 Holiday Barbies....and every single one was white. I know because I looked at every box. Every baby doll, Barbie doll, and every other Bratz doll was non Black or any other distinquishable color. I know I have the option of ordering but why should I when I frequent that store to buy groceries as well as other household needs.

I could understand if the store in question was in a highly white suburban area with the nearest people of color more than 50 miles away. However, this store is less than 7 miles from a small city with a black population with greater than 40% black. Is the reason to deter black shoppers from frequenting the store? I don't think that is what corporate would want you to do. Last time I checked African Americans were a growing population in the area and I believe one of the most consumer driven populations.

Address the lack of diversity in their store.

You may want to rewrite this so it has a correct title. When Walmart
gets this complaint about a lack of "adversity" they are probably
going to toss it in the garbage, and that's too bad cause it's a good
letter.

Imagine being me as a child. I'm black, Asian and white. Unless they
have a mixed barbie out there somewhere, my background will never be
addressed. Thankfully, I'm okay with that. And I can just have my
pickings of the three.

You probably addressed the reason for not having the African American
dolls in your post.

They may have already been bought out due to the large African
American community in the area. It's like where I live you can find
African American dolls, you can find Caucasian dolls but you better be
there on release day to get a Hispanic doll. (You can never find
Barbie's friend Teresa anywhere and that's my daughter's favorite .)

If you are all about diversity, then why not give a white doll as a
gift?

It's sad to see this is still a problem; my parents only found one
Asian Barbie during my doll years, and a quick glance now confirms
this continues. Even the Sears brand "Looks Like Me" dolls are
exclusively Caucasian (I've got other problems with the Sears Wish
Book, but now is not the time...).

Out of curiosity, I went to both the Barbie and the Bratz websites. I
found a new African American Holiday 2008 barbie, but no new African
American bratz dolls.

Granted, both sites were so full of bubble gum, giggles, rainbows, etc
( I am NOT a girly girl), I many have overlooked more....however, I am
truly surprised these manufacturers do nto showcase more diversity.

I am sure if I missed something, someone here will point it out for
us.

Oh, it also seems Barbie has a new African American doll coming in
February, if I read correctly.

Just a suggestion, the OP may want to also write to the manufacturers
of these items.

This is a good letter and excellent feedback. It is odd that you
suddenly can't find the dolls you're looking for. I hope you get a
response and some action. In the meantime, duly's idea of Ship to
Store is a good one. You can order the dolls online and pick them up
at the store. There have been good and and bad reviews of the service
here on PFB, but it's worth a try since you might not find the dolls
in the store in time for Christmas.

Christmas must be a lot of fun with such a large family. I can't
imagine having six daughters... I hope you have more than one
bathroom!

It seems very peculiar that if they stocked these dolls before they
would not have them now. Maybe they do but they have sold out...or
maybe the order did not come in.
I hope you find the dolls...these are a very important and stable gift
for any little girl.

I would suggest if they have these online you can order these and pick
them up at your local Walmart store. I heard them advertsise this
service (in our area) on a local tv station the other day.

Wow, six daughters?!? You must have lots of crazy fun at your home!

I don't see why they aren't stocking more non-white
dolls--*especially* with the local black population. As a white
person, if I were a parent, I'd certainly want my child to play with a
variety of dolls, not just ones that look like them!

Have you tried speaking with the store manager/buyer?
