Stop ripping people off, Walmart

Posted Wed September 16, 2009 12:00 pm, by Shirley G. written to Walmart

I stopped at my local WalMart on my way to work on the 14th of this month to buy a few things. One of the things I bought was a wallet (White Stag brand, wallet/checkbook holder type). The price tag had a price of $9.96 on it. Since I was on my way to work, I used the self-checkout lane, paid and went on my way (for this, I take total blame. I should have looked when I paid). After I got to work, I looked at the receipt. It said I had paid $10!! NOT $9.96 as the tag said. Is this how WalMart makes it's profit? Bilking unsuspecting people of pennies at a time? I realize that 4 cents is not alot of money but given the amount of people that visit their store on any given day, that adds up.

Make sure people pay what's on the tag. Stop ripping people off. If you want $10 for something, mark it $10. Sam Walton would roll over in his grave if he knew how his stores were being run.

i don't know....i honestly don't think wal mart has a scheme to rip
people off, four cents at a time.

it was probably just an honest mistake. go get your four cents back.

If you still have the reciept and the wallet, take them both back to
the customer service desk and they will refund the difference.

Did you take into account that there may have been tax on it?

I have come to learn to always check my receipt before I leave, I try
to watch as things ring thru but I double check my receipt. One time
they charged me twice for one video game.

I would have went in and got my 4 cents back, for reason hopefully
that would catch the glitch on the computer.

You are right things like this never went on when Sam Walton was
alive. It has happened to me,Family members and friends of mine
also.Every time we go to shop at Walmart. We have all started shopping
elsewhere as much as possible. We have also noticed that a lot of the
items you can price match, they seem to be out of until the other
stores sales adds expire,so happens. And also we seem to be buying the
products they choose for us more and more. Not what the people want. You
get use to buying it and then it is gone. The shelves are getting
shorter on items they sale. And seems their store products are getting
smaller in size. Please help.Happening in Fort smith Arkansas.Oh
Yes,also one town away,or 10 miles apart my dog food is a dollar
higher. What's this about? And as you stated prices are always ringing
up incorrect. My husband unloads the basket and I watch the prices. You
have to do this. And last of all 3 times now I have gotten home to find
items I paid for missing.Once a whole sack full.I always ask and look
to make sure now.Still this last time I went to shop I had a coupon
for buy 2 and get a dollar off. Some how we one had one when we got
home.Missed that one I guess.

This goes on all the time at Walmart. The company must make alot of
extra money this way. Often the over charge is above 1 dollar on a
single item. I"ve seen it happen countless times.....Bye Gone To
Target

At least you had the fortitude to call yourself out. True, the
cashier should have looked at the tag and notice price difference and
corrected it, it is also the customers resposibility to look at the
receipt and they do have a visual display at the cash register that
shows what you are buying. Take responsibitlity for yourself and
protect yourself from the 4 cent overcharge. Did you return to
Walmart for the 4 cent overcharge and give them the chance to
recitify? No one ripped you off. Attention to detail on both parties
would have concluded a better ending.

Virtually every store you visit that sells multiple items to almost
all customers will have this problem whether policy or not. Winn Dixie
Supermarket here in the South is "really bad". I have found as many as
three items on a less than 10 item purchase with a higher price at
checkout in Wal-Wart and Winn Dixie. I check the register as they are
being checked out by the clerk If I miss one I check the reciept when
I get through the line. I am more than sure I save more than $100.00
per year doing this. It seems like a hassel but that is because we are
all in to much of a hurry anyway. Its just a few seconds out of your
day.

Companies that do this regularly;

All Department stores
All grocery Stores

Companies that do this randomly;

All Phone Service Companies
All Cable TV
All Satellite TV (but not so often)
All Cellphone Companies
All utility Companies

The only thing that gets me to side with Walmart on this is the fact
that you were in the self-checkout o.o...you should have checked the
price yourself to be honest.

But if you still have the tag, and the receipt, you can go to the
customer service department and demand either a refund or the price
difference.

Dumb question, but are you sure it wasn't taxes that was added on to
the 9.98? (just got to cover all the possibilities).

You'll get the item for free if it rings up more than what it is
advertised for. Go back to customer service and demand a full refund -
it's part of Walmart's policy...

I bought a small waterbottle there, and it didn't even work. It's one
that had a straw and when i tried to sip it, nothing. Walmart is great
for some things, but sucks for others.

I hear "Sam Walton would roll over in his grave" all the time. I
think some people would be surprised by how ruthless and profit-driven
the man was. Don't forget that this was the man who started the "Made
in America"campaign to sell things that weren't made in America. I'm
not saying that he didn't have a good bone in his body but don't
believe the hokey, homespun, next-door-neighbor image that was/is
presented.

Usually caused by a employee not repricing a item when a price
increase or decrease comes through their system. Just stupid
mistakes. Like not noticing the price when you ring it up YOURSELF!!

Maybe its Walmarts way of recouping its loses. They have to find some
way of getting the millions to pay for the lawsuit to the employees
that they forced to work off the clock.

WalMart used to have a policy of giving you $3.00 if something rang up
the wrong price. I don't know if they still do that or not. I'd take
it back and see. 4 cents isn't worth it, but $3 might be.

I'd take the receipt in and price tag (if you don't have the price tag
maybe one of the ones in stock will have one on it) and ask for a
refund. They should honor it no problem.

I don't think Walmart is pricing things a few cents extra on purpose.
As a former cashier (not at WM) believe me, people notice if things
are off by a penny. Not all people, but enough.

I don't think they are intentionally ripping you off. One of the few
things I like about Walmart is they actually price stuff at $10
instead of $9.99.

Sounds to me like this was a manufacture price tag (like on Little
Debbies where the price is printed right on the box) and whenever they
entered it into the POS system, they didn't realize this and entered
it as $10. Hopefully they will fix the price and offer you the refund
you deserve.

Take responsibility for your own actions and make sure items ring up
correctly. If WalMart wants to rip you off they can certainly do it
faster than 4 cents at at time.

How do you know it is deception? Does this happen frequently, or is it
an isolated incident? It may have been a mistake, either on the IT end
(programming the register system) or on the store level (employee
mis-priced, or price went up without being retagged).
You should speak with the service desk and they should give you a
refund. I doubt this is dishonest practice, but an error. We are all
human.

That's interesting. I wonder if it's limited to the self-checkouts,
but I can't imagine how. This is something that would bother me too.
Not for the four cents, but for the deception and hidden profit.

It shouldn't make a difference but was it a White Stag price tag or
one put on by Walmart?
