US ARMY soldier asking for help

To whom it may concern.

I have been an WAMU/Providian customer since 2000 and during that time, I have enjoyed my experience with Washington Mutual greatly. I am writing to see if you would be willing to make a "goodwill" adjustment to your reporting to the three credit agencies. I have nine late payments on the above referenced account that date back to July 2002-2003. They were due to an error.

Because of my exceptional payment history over the last 4 years, I would like you to consider removing the negative payments from my credit report. At the time of the late payments, I was (and still am) in the Military and I was deployed to the middle east during that time. I set up automatic payments for this account through my bank, but there some some kind of problem that caused it to pay the first payment late. This in turned caused all the next payments to be 30 days late. I thought i was paying on time, but i was always one payment behind. I was not able to check my accounts until much later in the year as i did not have access to my account (internet) in Iraq. Since that time I have been an exceptional customer paying every month on time. I say that not to justify why the payments were late, but rather to show that the late payments are not a good indicator of my actual credit worthiness. I hope that Washington Mutual is willing to work with me on erasing this mark from my credit reports.

I have other credit cards, with higher credit limits, but Washington Mutual's customer assistance is great. The reason i ask is that i have been declined for other credit due to these notations. They specifically mention the lates on this account. I really don't think i should be punished for 7 years for a simple error that caused a chain reaction that i did not know about.

I have been a very happy customer in the past and hope to continue a long relationship with Washington Mutual. With today's credit industry so competitive, I know how important it is to maintain good relationships with customers. Washington Mutual has been exceptional in my book so far and I highly recommend it to all my friends and relatives. I hope that you will deeply consider my request and prove once again, why Washington Mutual is heads above the rest. I look forward to your reply.

Understand that there were some uncontrollable circumstances that caused me to not be able to correct this in a timely manner. I would like them to remove these late payments, since for the last 4 years i have been current and never late.

I have seen letters with many reasons for people not making on time
payments, most of them really just "excuses". My favorites have been
"We just had a new baby". Somehow, I've managed to have four children
and still pay my bills on time.

But after reading this letter, I feel you have a very solid reason for
the late payments, and your credit should be restored. You were
proactive by setting up the automatic payments, showing that you
wanted the payments to be made while you were gone. I'm not sure, but
you may have been elligible for some sort of deffered payments, but
you did not take that route. That, along with your good history,
should show WAMU that you are worthy of having your credit restored.

I am curious, though; did you speak with an individual at a branch or
over the phone? Speaking with someone one-on-one may get your message
across even better.

I wish you luck, and thank you for serving our country!!!

Best of luck with that venture. I was a WAMU customer for a year.
Never a late payment, but found WAMU customer service to be nothing
but contradictions and a run around. All I asked for after a year was
an intrest rate reduction, and after a song, dance and a dozen emails
they finally decided a lower rate wasn't an option on my
card...although it was almost double the rate of my other cards. This
was one of those 0% for a year then goes to like 23.99%. I'm guilty of
not reading the fine print, but I promptly closed the card and took a
bank loan to close the account. WAMU's excuses and run around answers
were what really just annoyed me. Thanks anyway WAMU...gig someone
else with your ridiculas rates!!!!!

I agree with the OP, his credit should be restored ASAP! Here this
man is putting his life on line every day for us. He chose to be a
soldier and defend ALL of us. I work with the military (I'm a
civilian) and most people have NO idea what I see. I get a REAL LIFE
rude awakening every Friday evening. When I leave my comfy air
conditioned office to go home for the weekend, I look over to my left
on the tarmac and there sits a row of medical buses waiting for the
injured soldiers to arrive, and take them to Walter Reed. It is the
saddest sight to see.

first, thank you for your service. secondly, i hope they will make an
adjustment. i think your reason for falling behind was excellent and
i hope they take the mitigating circumstances into consideration.

WAMU has every right to have negative marks on your credit for this
instance. I really dont think people intentionally pay their bills
late, or make mistakes so their bills dont go through on time.
Everyone has a reason why they were late on their payment, and most
have a pretty convincing reason as to why. This is the punishment for
such behavior.

Only suggestion I can give, is to pay off your credit card debt, and
be done with them all. WAMU is a snake and will continue to bite.

Good Day

Hi James-

You might want to enlist Army legal if you don't get a response from
WAMU. Friends had a similar situation when both he and his wife were
deployed, and they set up a meeting upon their return with their
branch manager, presenting them with paperwork showing their
deployment, a copy of the "soldier/sailor" act ( I think that's the
right name) and showing the good faith effort they had made to arrange
these things ahead. I believe they also had a letter from legal that
stated there was no internet while they were in region. The bank
reinstated their good record after making copies of all the documents.
Good luck to you!

I am usually the first person to respond to these types of letters,
saying, "Tough toenails." I don't believe AT ALL in "goodwill"
adjustments just because someone goofed up and now they want a clean
credit report.

But in this instance, I am on the OP's side.

I do hope they acquiesce and do you this favor. It seems obvious that
you took care of everything in good faith, regardless of whether the
initial error was your fault or the fault of the bank.

Good luck to you!

Separately, thanks for your service. Very much.
