Wendy's Closed Early

Posted Mon January 30, 2006, by Ron L. written to Wendy's International, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I just got home from work and my wife and I decided to go to Wendy's before 2:00 am and get some food. We pulled into Wendy's parking lot at 1:40 am and it was closed already. We double checked our Sirius radio for time confirmation and it was 20 minutes till 2am as stated above. This store is located in Bradford, Ma.and the date was on January 30, 2006.

I want Wendy's to ensure that their stores stay open for business as per their advertised statement on their signs. It was a real inconvenience for us to drive to Wendy's in Bradford to get food when they decided it would just close early. I want Wendy's to reimburse me for the fuel that I used in the form of a coupon for two #2's with cheese, Biggie Sized.

I got my coupons from Wendys Corporate with a letter of apology. And I
don't blame Wendys Corp. for my waste of time, gas or inconvenience.
This Wendys has always posted a sign on their menu board and drive
thru windows whenever something out of their control happens and they
have had to close early. This Wendys stated closing time was 2am and
no signage was put up explaining why they were not open at 1:40 am and
the employees inside ignored us when we were at the window thusly we
didn't get a verbal explanation from them either. I feel asking for
compensation is appropriate and justified. And so I was by Wendys
Corp.

Let's see. Two #2 combos (the Classic Double), with cheese added,
biggie sixed. That's gotta run somewhere between $10-$12. Gas prices
nationwide are averaging somewhere around $2.35 a gallon. So, if
you're factoring by equal compensation, you're saying that you burned
somewhere around five gallons of gas just to drive to Wendy's.

So I guess I'm to assume one of two things. Either you a) Live 50-100
miles out of Bradford, or b) Drive a tank.

Your complaint is fine. Your idea of fair compensation is not.

Yes, it's frustrating to have places close earlier than their posted
times. They could have a legit reason for closing. Then again, it
could be just a bunch of non-caring employees wanting to get off
early.

However, if that happened to me, I would simply go to my nearest
convenience store and grab a bite. There are 7-11s all over the
country, and chances are pretty good that there was one within the
20-minute drive. And some of their sandwiches aren't all that bad,
either.

As for his compensation request, I don't think it's reasonable.

I agree that you have a valid complaint, but I don't believe you
deserve any kind of compensation for it. Like others have said, they
probably closed early due to lack of help.

Two points I don't think anyone's mentioned yet:

1) First thing to do is to call the store in the daytime when, most
likely, the store manager is in. They need to know if their night
shift is closing early if you want the problem corrected. Chances are
they'll never even *see* a letter sent through this site.

2) Yours is a reasonable complaint, and well-written. However, your
best chance to get free food for the inconvenience would have been
*not* to ask for it. As a fast-food manager in a place I won't name, I
can tell you that when someone makes a complaint in the way you did,
and it's something reasonable to complain about, I generally will
offer something free as well as fixing the problem... but rarely to
someone who demands it, and never if they demand compensation for gas,
time, phone bill (yes, it's happened) etc.

to the ones that replied to my post: I simply stated that i agreed the
restaurant should stay open until posted hours, HOWEVER emergencies do
come up.

also maybe this particular location is only open until 1 am. Just so
you know, I work an 8 to 5 job AND a 6-11 job, and after I get off
work, if im hungry i find something to eat at home.

For this guy to state he wants reimbursement for wasting gas, is
ridiculious--which is what i was mainly commenting on.

Wendy's isn't going to reimburse you for jack, especially if you
demand a coupon for _two_ #2's biggie sized. Get a life and go to
McDonald's because most of them are open all night.

I agree with the other posts, while Wendys should stay open until
posted hours, emergencies to come up where the place may close.
Besides eating after 7 or 8 is really bad for you, especially fast
food. Do you not have food at home, you could have ate? You should
have gone to Ihop or something, where its a little better but not by
much, than fast food. Asking to be compensated for wasting gas, by
means of coupons is ridiculious on your part.

Sometimes these places are open until 2 only during certain days of
the week. Some of them, it's only during the summer. I am one of those
people who works late, and I like having a Taco Bell near my job
that's open if I get out by 1 or 2, but they don't do that in the
winter, so I have to go to the 24hr Dunkin Donuts instead if I'm
hungry.

Since the hours vary by location, season, and day of the week, I
usually call first if I'm making a special trip out. And that's what
you should have done. Called to see how late they were open. Duh.

Your letter was well written until the last sentence...

or, uh, on second thought, ehhh, I think I was there right behind you.
Ah, I'd like two triple combos with biggie fries and baked potato with
everything.

Are the posted hours for this location 2:00AM seven days a week? Some
places close earlier on Sundays (even though the time said Monday, it
is still Sunday for business purposes) and not all Wendy's have the
same hours.

Did you call this location in the morning and let the manager know?

Your car must get real lousy mileage if you are asking for $13 worth
of food to make up for it

Whine, Whine, Whine. Stop acting like a 2 year old. No one needs to
eat at 2 am and I'm sure there is food in your house. Sometimes things
happen and not eating greasy fast food at 2 am is not the end of the
world. There are people out there with real problems so stop
complaining and stop trying to get free food.

Because your letter is so well written, simple and to the point, and
you definitely have a legitimate complaint, (even though it was 2:00
a.m., that was probably supper time for you), I hope they honor your
request.

There could be a million reasons why they closed early, but as someone
already said, the very least they should have done was post a sign,
which would let their customers know they're not in the habit of
closing early.

I think the request for compensation is reasonable enough. Failing to
maintain your posted opening hours is pretty serious, and management
should be eager to make this customer happy.

Don't you know anything you eat after 7pm goes straight to your butt!
:) hehe just kidding.... but really maybe they stay open if they are
making a certain amount per hour.. like they had to make $100 in the
12-1 hours to stay open 1-2. I know some resturants do that.

They could have closed early due to lack of employees. The fastfood
industry has a HUGE turnover and people are constantly not showing up
to work or just walking off the job. Perhaps several employees called
in sick? There was an article in my local paper a couple years back
about the turnover ratios in fastfood and several stores were
interviewed. Many managers did comment that sometimes they had no
choice but to close early due to lack of staff that day. I do think
the store should have posted a sign on the drive-thru speaker
informing customers of their early closing.

Your request for two value meals, (biggie-sized no less!!), is not
appropriate.

You have a legit gripe but your request for essentially "free food" is
ridiculous and makes your letter look like a joke if not a scam.

Wow - you must have driven a long way.

#2 (Double Cheese) - Approx $5.50 here
Biggie Sized (because we all need that at 2:00 am) - $.50

Total $6.00 * two meals = $12.00 reimbursement.

Yes, it's a pain when they close early, and frustrating. I have been
there.

But still....
