Seven person boycott - Please stop the ad campaign!

Posted Wed September 12, 2007 10:41 pm, by Catherine B. written to Wendy's International, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

I typically eat at Wendy's with co-workers at least one time each week - we enjoy the food, the service and the value. Unfortunately, the ad campaign featuring red-wig-clad men proclaiming the wonder of Wendy's meals has driven us to boycott your company until the ad campaign ends.

We beg you - Please stop airing these ads! We have no idea who hired the company producing them, but we have a feeling Dave Thomas is rolling over in his grave. Hopefully, he is clawing his way out of the grave to come wreak vengeance on the advertising firm. With every commercial we see, our desire to purchase a burger or Frosty diminishes. It's frustrating to see a company we love start to annoy us with a deluge of - frankly - really bad ads. It's leaving a sour taste in our mouths. Also, we would love to see the "comments" section of the wendys.com website function - or at least we would like to be given access to a toll-free customer service line while the comment sections is under construction. (The number listed is a toll number.) Please help us!

I think pretty much ALL ads are annoying. However, ads serve a
purpose, which is to create new interest and business in a company's
product. Ads that appeal to targeted groups may not appeal to you,
personally. I don't see why you feel a boycott is necessary when you
can simply use the power of your thumb to shut the television off.

What in the hell do these ads have to do with the taste of a Frosty or
burger at Wendy's???

I have absolutely no idea why this is the big deal you are trying to
make it.

This letter baffles me...

Rule 1 in advertising. Get them to remember your ad at all costs. It
seems to be working with you and your 6 friends.

Rule 2. Disconnect the feedback button on the internet site when you
recognize a particular users ISP address so they can't use it because
you get nasty letters from them all of the time.

Hey lady......it's a fricking hamburger you're boycotting.
Wow.....how do you feel about the war in Iraq? Now that's something
to get your panties in a wad about!

Peace!

What were [they] thinking? What is the commercial even advertising???
Isn't it boasting UN-FROZEN HAMBURGER PATTIES?????? Wow! THEN WHAT IS
IT??? Do they mix a batter or something like pancakes, I'm a little
confused. I'm pretty sure they don't have on-site hunters and butchers
right??

So basically we're eating something other than meat is that what
they're saying? Cuz i'm am sooo good with my fast food 'meat' being
frozen before i order it.

I eat much healthier now since seeing the distastful, insulting
commercials, (but then again, what could be expected, i was after all
watching tv)

Has anyone ever seen SOILENT GREEN.!!.............

I dont see why you hate it. Its silly. Immature maybe. But its not
creepy like Burger King.

Personally, I like the commercials. Well, maybe like is too strong a
word. I dont really like commercials at all. But I dont DISLIKE these
commercials.

Its strange to me that you find these commercials THAT disturbing that
you not only wrote a letter..but are boycotting as well.

LOVE your letter!

I agree, I HATE the men in Wendy's red pigtails (we've seen several
versions here) ... ABHOR the freaky Burger King "King", and am totally
creeped out by the McDonalds slithering slug people.GAK.

HOWEVER, as demonstrated above, brand name recognition is vitally
important. The ads get the job done, despite the heebie jeebie factor.

OK, these commercials are really silly, although I will admit I like
the one with the policeman: "Don't let chicken be bad". That one had
me laughing for five minutes.

I guess it says alot for the level of my sense of humor that I laughed
uproariously at this commercial.

::Hangs head in shame::

But then again, I'm so warped that my teenage boys are sometimes even
shocked at the things I find amusing. So I'm sure I'm in the vast
minority.

That is all.

Commercials are meant to catch the public's attention long enough to
get us interested in their product.

While I don't find the commercials as offensive as, say, the
"Viva...Viagra" radio ad, I agree that this is a rotten campaign.

You can add me to your boycott if you're keeping tabs (though I don't
eat much fast food - it's not cost-effective when there aren't many
places within walking or biking distance, and i'm factoring a gasoline
budget). I wish PlanetFeedback has been here during other campaigns
that bugged me :)

GREAT letter. No threats, nothing mis-claiming racism. Just the
facts, and honest opinions.

It appears you & your co-workers aren't the only people who thought
this was dumb:

I searched for customer service numbers, but only came up with toll
numbers too.

Hope they respond - I'm interested to see if they really take their
customer base into consideration in these instances.

OK, so I went on YouTube and checked out a couple of these
commercials.

Now, as someone who worked in brand promotion for some time, I can say
that the red pigtails on the girl in the logo are a big part of
recognizing the Wendy's brand. That being said, I can understand the
thought process behind the commercials: a mass of people doing
something brainless, and one guy (sporting the red pigtails, so you
recognize him as the representative of the Wendy's brand), thinking
freely and doing his own thing. The message they are trying to send is
that Wendy's thinks differently than the other burger joints in the
way they prepare their burgers.

I'm not going to say that the commercials are funny or catchy, but I
also don't think they are offensive, nor would they make me want to
boycott Wendy's. I hate to say it, but the commercials do get the
message across.

I'd rather was those stupid commercials than the ones for Carls. Those
are disgusting. They're all so repulsive that I've stopped going
there.

Yeah, the ones for Wendy's are really dumb.

I agree with you one hundred percent.

Those ads are the worst. Clearly they're trying to be edgy but all
they're doing is messing with an icon. There's no way Dave Thomas
would have allowed this to happen.
