Why So Many Bags, Wendy's?

I visited the Wendy's in north St. Augustine this afternoon around 4:30pm on Tuesday, July 24. I ordered a number 1 with a large coke, a crispy chicken sandwich, a side caesar salad, and an order of strawberry yogurt.
The food is consistently good at this location and the employees have always been courteous and helpful. My complaint has to do with the paper bags you put the food in.
When I left the drivethru, I had a total of four bags. One for the salad, one for the yogurt, one for the fries, and one for the burgers. While I understand the necessity of putting cold food in a separate bag from the warm food, I don't see any reason why the salad and the yogurt weren't put together and the burgers and the fries together in another bag.
I just think this is unnecessary waste. None of the bags have a recycle symbol or a "made from recycled paper" logo, so I have to assume that these bags do not get recycled. With global warming such a huge issue now, I don't feel polluting the environment with superfluous bags is a good idea.

Lately a lot of places are doing this. My guess would be that enough people complained about their yogurt being in the same bag as their salad and how it destroyed their lunch, family picnic, yogurt enjoyment ceremony, or life, and the fast food joints made a change to address the customer complaints and now have the other side complaining about it. No one can ever win over any issue no matter what because someone is always offended no matter what you do.

I really think this is a petty thing to complain about. That being said, you are the customer and are enttitled to have your complaint heard. If you are bothered by it you could talk to the manager about it.
I work retail grocery and understand some people are environmental people. Those people usually bring reusable cloth bags for their groceries to be put in. Maybe this is something you may want to consider

The salad and yougurt should have been in one bag, while the fried and burgers in another. I really think they should have given 2 only think of all the bags they are wasting by giving more than is needed.

I've noticed a lot of bags being used at a lot of places. I know it's convenient for the workers at each station, but it makes sense to consolidate the orders according to temperature and use less paper.
I have to agree with your concern. I think your observations and suggestions should be addressed. I do know a lot is wasted at drive thru's to "save time". I always take the extra packets, utensils, napkins and use them at home. But I see others just toss them. I also think using recycled products is a great idea.

I noticed that my local Wendy's had started to do this too. The one I go to is in the mall, so I can see right into their little kitchen area. It's like...as soon as part of the meal's done, they bag it. Sandwich is done--okay, it gets a bag. The yoghurt gets its own bag and then finally the fries gets it's own bag. It's silly. Maybe it's some new policy?
It's only certain employees that do this (newer ones), so if I see that employee I just tell them to throw everything into one bag.

I know the bags are superfluous. It could be that they bag food as they get it ready at the drive-through window for you, in order to keep the food temp appropriate.
I like the suggestion that you reuse the bags, but if something has food residue (grease), ick. My McDs gives me tons of salt and pepper packets with my morning breakfast order (an egg biscuit, with which I request 3 packets of ketchup). I'm a bit annoyed by this waste, but the alternative is annoying a really wonderful fast-food joint that has its act together -- the food really is quite fresh, the employees are friendly and have personality, the managers are top-notch. Heck, one of the female employees in the morning reminds me of Maggie Gyllenhahl (sp?) and she's BLACK. How cool is that?
I just figure, I don't want to mess with the great mojo this restaurant has and I keep my mouth shut, and I donate the salt and pepper packets to the lunchroom where I work. I hope people use them.
In the long run, your getting a few extra bags is the least of the problems of this planet. Take reusable fabric bags to the grocery store. Reuse clean plastic bags in your household (i use them for bathroom garbage and cat litter). I ask friends for their plastic bags and paper grocery bags for my household garbage and recycling, since I don't acquire these bags through shopping.
At any rate, good letter, great sentiments, good karma.

If you frequently go to this location you would know its a common practice. Yet, have you ever asked anyone to consolidate bags? Your just as much to blame, and this really is not a letter to be written to the corp. talk to a manager about this

One thing you could do is reuse the bags. Maybe use them as garbage bags at home. This would help cut down on the use of regular garbage bags that you would have used anyways.
