Kids Drinks + Bendy Straws = Happy Customer

Posted Sun June 18, 2006, by Barbara T. written to Whataburger, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company

Summertime means road trips, means grabbing a meal on the go.

Any parent out there will understand what I mean when I say that kid-size cups and full-size straws are a difficult combination. Either the child has to hold the drink cup somewhere around their ankles in order to sip from the straw, or they tilt the cup to far toward themselves, and the drink leaks all over them.

So I was absolutely delighted when I pulled through a Whataburger drive-through one day and discovered that all the children's drinks - even cartons of milk - came with flexible bendy straws!

What a simple, yet brilliant idea! A quick check with the shift supervisor confirmed that this is a chain-wide amenity. Whoever thought of this should get a raise or a bonus right now. My kids were able to enjoy their drinks comfortably, and with no mess.

We usually choose fast-food restaurants based on which one is on the right side of the off-ramp, but in the future, we will definitely choose Whataburger over other available options - no matter how inconvenient it will be to get back on the highway!

Sincerely,
Barbara T.

Bendy straws definately are the best. I keep a couple in my purse or
if you really get in a pinch and you have a pocket knife, you can make
the straws a bit shorter and easier to handle!

Probably another mom who thought up the idea! LOL :) Even some
hospitals have them and know you cant always sit up when you have
surgery. Helps a lot.

For some reason your letter reminds me of something called Fizzies. It
was about the size of Alka Seltzer tablets and there were different
flavors. You put them in a glass of water and they fizzed and flavored
your water.

I hadn't seen them since I was a kid (the 60's). One day I was at the
99 cent only store and saw some. I actually got excited and bought a
package. Boy, they just weren't the same.

I guess your excitement about the straws made me think of it.

It was nice of you to let them know how happy you are about them.

You know, isn't it wonderful how the it's the little things that mean
the most. I loved your letter!

My mortgage broker goes the extra mile with the "little things". A
few weeks after moving into our new home we get a letter in the mail
from our mortgage broker. Inside were 15 2 cent stamps (this was
about the time when postage went from 37 to 39) with a note saying to
use them in conjunction with your 37 cent stamps. Now, this was worth
very little monetarily but worth a million when it comes to
extrordinary customer service. He also sent us to boxes of cookies at
Christmas time and acknowledges every holiday with some kind of post
card or other type of note. He's truly incredible and I will go
through him for all my future mortgage needs.

It truly is all about the little things in life.

Gail and Tiffany (was it Tiffany? The "McDonald's ruined my meal"
chick?).

They could learn a lot from you.

Expect them at your door around supper time, some night soon.

Is it wrong that a grown man (I didn't say mature) still gets a
special kick out of the bendy straws? I love the bendy straw and
probably always will.

Good letter. I agree, bendy straws are a good idea for kids and even
some adults.

I just have one comment.

"Either the child has to hold the drink cup somewhere around their
ankles in order to sip from the straw"

This must be one flexible kid. I don't know if I ever saw any kid do
this. This comment just brought about an interesting image, but it is
a good letter.

Kids' ankles are really not that far away, in a car. by BarbaraT Mon June 19, 2006 @ 1:57 PM

This IS a great idea! Good letter.

When my kids were little, we kept a package of bendy straws in the
car. That way, we could switch the straws if needed. They're also
handy in "real" restaurants--you know, sit-down, metal silverware and
breakable plates. Those places rarely have lids for their cups, and
the spilling potential is huge.

I am also always thrilled when I go into a restaurant that offers
bendy straws. Also, cups with lids. Little ones don't always get
that they have to keep the cup at a certain angle to keep liquid from
spilling out.

Great letter - thanks for sharing!

Awesome! Glad it worked out. This is a good letter!

When I was a kid I would always bend the straw whether it was a
"bendy" one or not. :)

I'm sure the person who proposed the idea will be sending you a
compliment when he/she gets their raise ;)

Great letter! It's the perfect kind of feedback that tells the
company they've made the right choice/investment and now maybe they'll
be more inclined to keep these bendy straws when they otherwise might
have switched to regular ones.

Thank you for taking the time to let them know about this and for
sharing this tidbit with everyone else. As a nonparent, I wouldn't
have thought bendy straws would be so useful! :)

Good job!
