Rude and Abusive Pharmacist at Winn-Dixie

Posted Thu April 3, 2008 11:40 am, by Dawn S. written to Winn-Dixie Stores

Write a Letter to this Company

I have tried several different Winn-Dixie pharmacies, and have found arrogance and poor customer service from all of them. Yesterday's experience put the nail in the coffin, and I will never again attempt to use a Winn-Dixie pharmacy, no matter what incentive you are offering.

My fiance and I each had prescriptions we needed to be filled. We have just moved to a new area of Jacksonville and decided to try the Winn-Dixie pharmacy in your store on Normandy Boulevard near Cassat in Jacksonville, Florida. As we approached the "Rx Drop-Off" area, a pharmacy tech was at the register with another customer. When she was finished with that customer, she just disappeared without a word to us. We waited for approximately 5 minutes, until the pharmacist came from the back. He was chewing something and wiping his mouth with a napkin, and as he approached us, he stopped to pick up the phone and answer a caller's question before waiting on us.

I had 2 prescriptions for antibiotics, one of which was Cipro, which I know Publix pharamcy will fill for free. Winn-Dixie had a sign up stating "We have free antibiotics!" so I handed him what I thought was my Cipro prescription and said "You do free antibiotics here?" He looked at it and said, with a snort, "Not THIS one we don't." I was a bit put off, but I said "Okay, no problem - I'll take it to Publix.", and took back the paper. The pharmacist then told me "Publix ain't gonna fill that for you for free either!" I replied politely "They will, I've had it filled there before." I had started to walk away at this point and so he yelled after me "Hey Lady, I'll give you a $100 gift card if Publix fills that for free for you - you don't know what you're talking about!"

By this time I was appalled by his attitude and embarrassed that he was yelling so rudely at me, and said "Look - I *know* they fill Cipro for free there..." when he interrupted me, still yelling "Cipro? You didn't give me a prescription for Cipro, you gave me a prescription for Levaquin!" Indeed I had made (I thought) a mistake, but by this time I was so disgusted by how he was comporting himself that I said "I apologize, I gave you the wrong prescrption." and again tried to walk away and he said, nastily, "Well? Aren't you gonna come get your free Cipro?" I replied "No, I will go to Publix, thank you." and was told "Good - you do that."

When I got to Publix, I took the other prescription out of my purse and handed it to the pharmacy tech who said "Do you have insurance?" I replied that I thought there was no charge for Cipro and she said "There isn't, but this is for Levaquin!" It turns out my doctor had mistakenly printed up two prescriptions for Levaquin instead of one of each. They quickly called my doctor and got it straightened out, and I was soon on my way with my Cipro. My fiance took his prescription to Publix as well - and even though Winn-Dixie would have matched Wal-Mart's $4 price on his, we happily paid his $10 copay at Publix.

There is nothing that Winn-Dixie can do to retain me and/or my family as pharmacy customers, but you may want to look into some Anger Management classes for your pharmacist at the Normandy Boulevard store. His escalating of a simple misunderstanding into verbal abuse of a customer was frightening and very much uncalled for. Other customers in the aisle near me came up to me afterwards and said "What is wrong with him? I hope you're going to report that!", so I know it wasn't just my reaction to the situation.

I agree with everyone else who says to go to CVS. I LOVE them, and
they always try to find the best deals for my medicine, even if it
means calling the doctor to get the offbrand, or something that my
insurance will cover.

As a practicing pharmacist for 32 years, I had one thing on my mind to
say to that fellow when I read what he was saying to you: "Get out of
here and go home." He should not be allowed to deal with the public.
His attitude is poison.

I didn't know that a mangy straw colour haired dog could be rude and
abusive. When I watched Winn-Dixie in action I always thought that he
was a very kind sweet little mutt.

Great Letter!

I find that having a decent relationship with my pharmacist is almost
as important as the same thing with my doctor, a good pharmacist can
save your life, especially with insurance and poor penmanship that
many doctors have. This pharmacist was way off base, there's no need
to be like that with anyone, especially a customer.

You would think that the money that pharmacist's make they would be
happy. I dated a Target pharmacist and he made $70/hour at that rate
they should be bending over backwards for the customers.

Absolutely find another Pharmacist....one YOU feel comfortable with.
I too have met many crappy service personnel in this field. CVS,
Walgreens are the two I have never gone back to. I am so happy with
Rite-Aid. The Pharmacist and techs know me by name and always
acknowledge me. In fact, the other day they gave me a get well card
with prayers, all signed by everyone in the store! They knew I had
received bad news in my treatments and the Pharmacist even came from
around the corner and gave me a hug! RITE AID...talk to them...get to
know them. They have always been awesome for me. Sorry for your
problems...no one when they are sick has to endure poor customer
service.

I am curious why a doctor gave you Cipro and Levaquin? They are both
in the same class of drugs. I find that odd! Levaquin is normally
given without other antibiotics and is strong.

That Levaquin can be nasty with very bad side affects, so if you fill
that one be careful! It is very expensive on top of everything else.

Does sound like Mr. Winn Dixie was lacking in the Customer service
dept.

One of the other posters is probably correct. Overworked with no real
break time / lunch time so sort of took it out on you.

Yes that sucks. But next time, realize the kid is just trying to cram
his lunch in his mouth because he can't get a single break from people
needing stuff. I love walking from the back with a mouth of food.
"You wanted me so bad, you can deal with the chicken smelling breath".
And, this is another case where someone states they can go somewhere
else and get better service, Really? Go there in the first place,
please!!

What is it with rude pharmacists? I had a similar experience at CVS
last year. I was picking up Easter candy, and my husband handed me a
folded paper and said "Can you drop off a prescription for me?"
So I handed the woman at the pharmacy counter the paper, and said "Can
I fill this please?" She openes it and know what she does? She says
"NO!!!" I looked confused. She threw it back across the counter at me
and said "This is NOT a prescription. THIS is a doctor's note."
My husband had given me the wrong paper. It was his "OK to return to
work" note. Well, he realized the mistake, and called me on my cell
phone while I was still in ear shot of the pharmacy counter. I told
him "Yeah, I know you gave me the wrong paper. I tried to fill it and
the pharmacist was a total bitch about it. Yeah, I know, she could
have been nice and said 'Oh, I think you brought the wrong paper', but
no, she had be sarcastic and then throw it at me"

Fortunately for that CVS, the other pharmacists are really sweet and
helpful. So I do keep going there. But I don't blame you one bit for
going to Publix instead. I think someone at Winn-Dixie needs to find a
new line of work!!!

That pharmacist was just unreal! I had my run ins with one of the
pharmacists at Rite Aid. The first run in I had was when I was short
5 painkillers. I called and she told me it was impossible because the
machine dispensed them. I told her impossible or not, I'm short 5 and
I want them. My neighbor and my friend had also counted them and they
are health professionals with state licenses. They are not going to
risk their licenses backing me up if they thought I was trying to scam
Rite Aid. She got really nasty with me and told me I had to come in
the next day and speak to the Manager.

The Manager knows me and had no problem giving me the 5 pills. He
knew I wasn't going to scam them for 5 lousy Vicodin.

I had other times where she was just plain nasty. I had enough and
spoke to him again. I told him I didn't want to move my prescriptions
because everyone else there is nice but she was just getting out of
hand. He must have said something to her because she's been nice as
pie since.

What's the deal with free antibiotics? I'm not familiar with this, so
can anyone clue me in on this?

Thanks.

Wow. Just...wow. There really isn't more I can say about that.

Great letter, Dawn. I appreciate your reasonable tone in this letter,
and I hope Winn-Dixie gets back to you.
