Poor Reporting on Gov Kaines address regarding VA Marriage Amendment

Posted Wed October 25, 2006 10:30 am, by Jeffersonian A. written to WVEC Television, Inc.

Dear WVEC: (Station Manager and CEO)
I don't know who your evening news writers are, but you can tell they are
Republicans!(SAD) I noticed last night (Oct 24th-6pm news) when you covered the info
about Gov Kaine opposing the marriage amendment you mentioned he has "signed a list"
with other lawyers that are opposing the amendment...
This is poor research on your writer's part, or should I say politics as usual on their part.
They clearly avoided sharing the fact that Gov. Kaine was the 200th lawyer to sign this
list!!! Let's see, 200 lawyers that say they could take to court any unmarried couple and
prosecute them using this new amendment or one Republican Attorney General that says
the fears are all false and that these 200 lawyers, indirectly, shouldn't have passed their
bar exam... Who are you going to believe??? As much as I hate lawyers, I have to go
with the majority on this case.
As an aside, it blows my mind that Senator Allen can make radio and TV ads that support
this amendment, and only acknowledges the first couple sentences of it. In all honesty, if
that were all the amendment said, I would vote for it! IT DOESN'T, the second half, that
is nearly 3 times longer, is what concerns every intelligent person in this state...
Please tell your writer, of this piece, to leave their religious and republican views at home
when they come to work. It represents WVEC poorly and has likely caused you to loose
my family as faithful viewers.

BALLOT QUESTION NUMBER 1
Question: Shall Article I (the Bill of Rights) of the Constitution of Virginia be
amended to state:
"That only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or
recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions.
This Commonwealth and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal
status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the
design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage. Nor shall this Commonwealth or
its political subdivisions create or recognize another union, partnership, or other legal
status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of
marriage."?

1. Do a full coverage segment on the topic and cover it fully, not just the bits that fit your news writers views. This is the exact bias that created this amendment in the first place.
2. Consider doing a debate with both sides, live on the air BEFORE November 7th.

Mike Gooding replied to me from WVEC. He wrote a very kind email
about my letter and was honestly sincere.
I guess there isn't much the media can do, this issue will have to be
decided in the hearts and minds of every Virginian...
WVEC is still #1 in my book.
I officialy have retracted my complaint...
